Have you tried asking this in the "Local Business - Seattle" section? Those who respond to those sections are usually very helpful and insightful.
I'm afraid I have run into some real quacks here in the Seattle area when it comes to the mental health field, but I have heard of some success stories in the Mercer Island and Gig Harbor areas.
Good luck.

Try crazymeds.org. They give common sense advice about psychiatric medications. Also go to NAMI.org, the national association on mental illness. They have some good info and links.

He should be seeing a psychiatrist regularly (like every month to every 3 months depending how stable he is and if there is a psychiatrist shortage there). He will have to take meds lifelong. I have some pals with schizophrenia, and they are ditzy, but pretty normal otherwise. I'm ditzy too, but I have bipolar. The drugs make you kinda spacey and forgetful, and the disorders do that too. You local NAMI may give you a list of good docs too, if you look them up on the national website and give the local office a call.

Also, in many states your friend is ENTITLED to help from social service agencies to help him find or keep a job, if he can work, help him find and keep decent housing, help him with government paperwork, manage medications, that kind of thing. This kind of help is offerred so people with serious psychiatric problems can live in the community. Hopefully, social workers would also help prevent a person from being exploited, which does happen a lot because you can be so ditzy from the meds & illness.

Good luck, there is help out there, just gotta access it. Families and friends will need to fill in the gaps, tho, because social services is only so-so helpful. (I had it for awhile, and my brother and many friends get help from social services).

Has your friend been diagnosed by a psychiatrist? Self diagnosis or diagnosis by a non professional is usually wrong. The misinformation about this disorder is abysmal. If he has been diagnosed by a psychiatrist he will be on medications and should be under the continuous care of a psychotherapist. The first thing you should do to help him is to understand the disorders. Schizophrenia is not a single disease but a spectrum of disorders.

Type in schizophrenia into Yahoo web search; a number of links comes up with good descriptions of the diseases. Wikipedia has a good summary. The second thing you should do is to be there for him; don't treat him in a condescending way but the same as any other so called normal person. He should be encouraged to stay on his med's. and attend any psychotherapy sessions he is scheduled for.

In the web search above you will find a number of links listing support forums and groups which you could suggest contacting if he wants such.

Good luck in relating to your friend, good metal health to him and you, peace and love!
