"Is it logical to think that everyone has the ability to create their own moral compass?"
I think that you have a point here - but notice that religion doesn't provide people with moral compasses either.
It'd be nice if there were some system that did provide moral compasses to people who aren't up to the task of figuring out right and wrong, but religion simply doesn't fill that bill. Witness Bush's behaviors - he claims to be guided by his religion, but he clearly hasn't got a clue about right versus wrong. He's hardly alone, either.

Oh yeah. Where would we be today without the Holocaust, countless religious wars and pointless deaths in the "name of God?"
Look, I'm sorry if everyone in the world doesn't have the mental capacity to live life for themselves, but I've gotten along fine for fifteen years without some Bible or some God, and I think, if people would just stop blaming religion for everything and started picking up the blame themselves, then the world really would be a better place. Are you honestly too blind to see all the problems religion HAS caused in the past? Have you not noticed that countless wars have been started for beliefs. Did you not know there's a war going on RIGHT NOW because of religious grounds in the Middle East?
Seems you're blinded by God. Sorry, but it's the theists that are missing the big picture.

Good question.
Sure we have law. Law that can manipulated, laws that is filled with loop holes, people who have enough cash laws do not apply to them, and seedy lawyers that make sure that public is fooled into thinking that laws protect them.
The bible hasn't changed in quite a while. Yes, it could use a a few revisions. But laws made by man are constantly being created. Created, not because man wants to better protect its citizens. New laws are created because the old laws has violated the rights of another man. It like putting a band-aid on top of another band-aid. If the seculars had it their way, you would need a law to take a **** or step outside your door.
Edit: Hitler was a christian, who turned to atheism. By your logic, that means that everyone who was raised a christian remains one despite the fact that they now have an atheist belief system. Stop trying to put your homeboy on us theist.

I am not socially blind, and I am strictly anti-religious. Religion is no longer needed to keep society in working order. We've got science. We can see stars, not God. I think Hitler is a horrible man. Are you trying to say we idolize him? People of organized religions are the ones who are missing the bigger picture, for they are making something that isn't even there the basis and guidance of their life. Just plain foolish.

Not only does religion generally not offer any morality (only prescriptions that mimic morality), but the prescriptions become absolute and negative things unfold from the attempt to follow.
For instance, I don't see how following the prescriptions of bronze age desert nomads (like the ones that wrote the Bible) has any relevance to today. How is this not about as socially blind as one can be?

The only time I ever think of Hitler is when some stupid Theist on here, once again tells what a terrible Atheist he was. Apart from correcting this erroneous belief, I can't say I think of Hitler at all.
Your link is dead BTW.

even if it were true that 'religion is needed to keep society in working order' - i don't think it is, other things can fill that function - it would not demonstrate that the claims of religion are true, which i think is the fundamental complaint that atheists have concerning religion. if your suggestion is intended as an argument, it would seem to be a fallacy known as the argument from consequences.

sadly, you're a fool. Religion hurts society, Morality has nothing to do with religion, Atheists know Hitler was evil. Basically, you need to stop judging Atheists. We're not blind, you and your so called faith is blind.

So you are saying that religion is in place to keep the masses in line?
Then I guess we agree on something. ;)
People can be moral, civil people without religion to keep them in check. If religion kept society in working order, then the religious would never be involved in crimes, immoral activities, etc., and all crimes and immoral activities would be perpetrated by atheists. This is simply not the case.
