Is that even real music anyway?
Why can't they realize that traditional is better?

It's just another way of making church look appealing to the young.

Traditional is better? That is a matter of opinion.

Music is the Lord's - He invented it. But, like anything, man can mess it up. But, beat, instruments nor volume are wrong if used for the Lord.

Remember, traditional music was once contemporary. Many of the tunes of the old hymns were taken from pub songs. Overall, it was the music of the day.

What I ask - does the singing lift up the Lord? Is Jesus getting glorified? Are people able to focus on the presence of the Lord?

What do the scriptures say about praise music? Words like loud and skillful are used. Many instruments are listed. You could probably quote some of these. But, nowhere is there a mention of style, which at that time was way different than what you would consider traditional.

If you were to step into my church, you would be likely in some shock. We do some of the popular choruses, some lesser known songs, some which were written by some of our music people, and even a hymn - Come Thou Fount, which we picked up the tempo and arranged it to a rock/black gospel sort of sound. But, we endeavor that all we sing and play to the glory of God - even if it is a little loud and exuberant for some. As a matter of fact, we have several members over 60, one over 80 and all join in to sing praises to the Lord.

Traditional is not better, but perhaps a different flavor. Don't discount the future generation, even if they bring along something new. When we are all dead and gone, they will be praising the Lord in song - some may even be "traditional", but many will usher in a newer sound - but all should be exalting the Lord, right?

Christian music can go wrong in two ways, whether traditional or contemporary.

First, and most basically, the words may not express a Christian idea. For example, "Let There Be Peace on Earth," might as well be sung in the United Nations as in church. It doesn't express any uniquely Christian understanding of peace, and it finds the solution in "me" rather than in Jesus.

Second, the music may not fit with the Christian lyrics. This is often a problem with alternative rock; it is not capable of expressing the complex emotions of Christian faith. The song, "Lord of the Dance" is an example of a mismatch. It uses a lilting, happy melody, "Simple Gifts," but one of the verses talks about the crucifixion: "They whipped and they stripped and they hung me high, and they left me there on the cross to die."

The best Christian music has sound Christian poetry as lyrics that people can understand in their own language (which usually rules out Latin), and which uses music to express the emotion of that poetry.

Cheers,
Bruce

I don't know how old you are--but I think that taste in music is a personal opinion--and not one where one is right and the other is wrong. I like praise and worship and I also like the old hymns. There is nothing wrong with either if your heart is in the spirit of worship. I do not think that Jesus used to listen to "The Old Rugged Cross" or "Blessed Assurance" when He walked on the earth, so would that make the hymns wrong?

You dam hoodlems with your long hair, and rock and roll 8 track cassettes. Back in my day...

Look granny, disrupting the status qou is a good thing. In order to prevent the mistakes of the past, we need to make changes. Just because your afraid of change, doesnt mean that traditional is better.

That's just life. Every generation changes with its youth. It's not necessarily a bad thing.

When it gets to this stage it is no longer about giving praise to God but to fufill the need for the feelgood factor.
