In oil and gas exploration (drilling), the geochemist will examine and analyze core samples from the depth(s) at which the oil or gas is supected to be. He/she can analyze these core samples to determine the amount of oil or gas that might be produced. Usually it is determined that there is none (dry well), or not enough oil in the sample for that well to be commercially viable, but sometimes a sample comes back rich in hydrocarbons and that oil well will produce oil.

In other areas of mining, geochemists analyze ore samples to determine how much of the metal (copper, zinc, silver, gold, etc,) is available. If there is a viable percentage of metal avalilable in the ore sample, then the company will probably decide to mine the area.
