Firstly: Red maple, Acer rubrum, has green leaves in the spring and summer, it turns red in the fall. It is so named because of it's red flowers, red petioles and eventually red fall color.
The tree could be one of many purple leafed forms. To narrow the search down, I'd need to see a picture. But I can say for sure, not red maple.
Consider:
Japanese maple, Acer palmatum. This is usually more shrubby. Many forms you can't walk underneath.
Norway maple, Acer platanoides. There are several cutivars that it could be: 'Crimson King', 'Deborah', Royal Red' and 'Schwedleri' I'm sure there are more.
Sycamore maple, Acer pseudoplatanus. There are several I'm sure, but this one for sure "Atropurpureum".
If you have some pictures, let me know. I'd be glad to revisit your question.
I hope that this helps
Good luck-

RE:
What kind of MAPLE tree DO i have? Red / Purplish leaves??
I read all the characteristics of different maple trees, but none fit what ours looks like. The tree has dark maroon (redish purple) leaves all summer, and then in fall the leaves turned a regular green color. Now that it is late fall, some of the leaves are a little yellow, then they turn brown...

Your tree may be a hybrid or 2 trees like a red maple and silver maple, which is why you can not find a pic that looks like it. Either way try this website to ask a tree expert.

It does sound rather like a Japanese Maple variety - is it a smallish (almost shrub-like) tree with deeply-cut, feathery leaves? No matter what, your best bet is to collect a few of the leaves and go to a local nursery to see if they have anything like it. Otherwise, could you post a photo of the leaf and of the tree?
