The Army currently has a two year enlistment option. However, that two years begins after you have completed Basic Training and your AIT. So, you are probably looking at close to 3 years on Active Duty. That means you will have to do another 5 years in the Reserves to complete all your time for the Military. If you signed up for 4 years Active Duty, you would have to do 4years in the Reserves. If you sign up for 6 years Active Duty, then you will have to do 2 years in the Reserves and so on...

I'm a former Marine, mind you, and alot of things have changed since I enlisted in 1992, but back then it was like a couple of other fellas have already stated: 4 years active and 4 years inactive ready reserves. I did almost 12 months with the reserves after my EAS from the fleet, but a fella got shot down in South Carolina after a night fire incident when another Marine was not shaken down properly; he used a clip of live ammo with a BFD on his rifle, and the rest is history. The Marine firing the rifle should have been injured, not the poor sorry sonofab!tch that got hit. I did the rest of my time IRR after that.
I don't know if things have changed with the Army since the decline in enlistments and the war, but the Army used to have a minimum two year enlistment as far as I know.
If you enlist in the USMC, ask about the 0311 MOS, I'm sure they're needed. That's infantry. Why else would you enlist, right? I'm being fascetious. I was an 0311--rifle company, not weapons...I got lukcy; no humping of base plates and mortar tubes for me. :-)

To join the Marines is a lifelong commitment, once a Marine always a Marine. No matter what contract you sign, its an 8 year obligation. if you sign up for 4 years, that means you do 4 years active and then 4 years inactive...etc. Same goes with any other branch

I do believe the minimum enlistment is 4 years. Call a recruiter to be sure, since they will have the info readily at hand.

all contracts have a 8 year reserve obligation but the amount of active duty time depends on your contract you sign, 3, 4 , 5 years with extentions (depending on some jobs).
