Having lived in NW Ont. for many years can tell you definitely that Atikokan is a thriving tourist community.

Atitoken is in Ontario's Sunset Country that features something for the whole family. It features Quetico Park which is considered Canoeing Capital of Canada and fishing is out of this world. Being so close to the US border it is the destination for many of our American neighbours who come here to fish, camp and hunt.

Things to see include the Walleye Hatchery which is run by a team of volunteers from the Sportman's Conservation Assoc. Just call for a tour and see what great work this place does.

Little Falls is a natural falls on the Atikokan River, located near the golf course.

Pictograph Gallery
Local art is on display and for sale at the gallery. It is located on the lower level of the Voyageur Mall in downtown Atikokan. Art exhibits are rotated on a monthly basis and a volume that is usually a local artisan staffs the gallery.

A local volunteer committee dedicated to preserving the rich mining history of the Atikokan area has established a mining museum. This facility is located right next door to the Atikokan Centennial Museum and houses many artifacts and has a database of over five thousand miner's histories. The Atikokan Mining Attraction offers self-guided tours of various mining murals and mining artifacts on display through out the town.

Atikokan Native Friendship Centre
Any visitor to Atikokan should spend some time talking with local native peoples at this location. A limited supply of high quality original native crafts is available for sale. The craftsmanship is of the finest you'll see anywhere so don't miss it.

If you're a Motocross enthusiast you won't want to miss the Walton Motorcross Race held in mid Aug. It is Canad'as largest outdoor event this participants looking for the Canadian Motocross championship title. Racers as from 7 to seniors all competing. What a wonderful family event!

If none of the above have convinced to to go consider the many lakes around the area with campgrounds and resorts for every budget and taste. It is truly an area where families can go and fun fun together. Take in the Bass Classic, golf in the summer and curling in the winter. It is home to the Nordic ski club and the Snow Ho Club for snowmaching.

Finally to answer your question - Lots of tourists find the tranquility of the lakes ideal for canoeing, camping, hiking, mountain biking and of course for fishing. Our neighbours from across the border make up a good portion of our tourist trade along with Canadians travelling through. Of course the Quetico Centre hosts conferences, workshops, etc for people from all over the world.

While I can't give you an exact number go visit on an weekend in the summer to see what a busy thriving community this is. Check it out during the Fall and see how many hunters come and enjoy the area. In the winter the town is filled with skiers and snowmachiners alike.

If you haven't ever visted there please do make plans and come and experience Sunset Country at it's best.

We've been there. We stopped because we had seen a tv documentary about the town. It is a lovely small town with very nice people.

The local tourist bureau sent us to a quiet camp which turned out to be exactly what we wanted. We stayed at Brown's Clearwater Lodge. Marvellous fishing and amazing sunsets over the water. Can't wait to go back.
