hahahahaha...I remember all the times that I prayed in Jesus' name that God would cure my depression, and there were multitudinous permutations of that prayer. It only got worse. I guess Jesus' gave me what I wanted when I became atheist. I've been much happier ever since.

Rove,
The answer to this question is complex and takes a very open mind.
Firstly, no one who actually knew the man is still alive, therefore the authors of the bible can say that he said a myriad of things and none can be proven on disproven. The same can be said for the 10 commandments as well.
Secondly, If he did in fact say this then it surely proves out the theory that Jesus was a heretic and therefore would not be responsible for anything he did in fact say. IF he did say this it was proven to be false a short while after it was written.
And lastly, the Bible is full of quotes and misquotes. It is full of things that simply make no sense at all. This is why faith is so key to the existence of christianity.
In conclusion, the only way to know what and if he said anything at all is to hear him say it for yourself...or take it on faith that he said it in reference being reborn as a christian.

Read all the verses before the promise and you will see that the promise was given NOT to us, but to Jesus' Apostles and close disciples that were with him at that time.
Those men had learned the truths of the Gospel, and already knew how to apply them. Jesus knew they would not ask for something that they should not ask for.... He knew that they would only ask what was needed for them to perform their missions, as authorised representatives of Jesus Christ. Not everyone is given that promise and that power... only men and women who are called by the power and authority of the priesthood of God.

Jesus did not lie to us. But there is a problem. Many think he meant that all you have to do is literally say His name, and presto, bingo, it happens.
We learn that it doesn't work that way after we all try it.
The next step is to understand the depth and meaning of the phrase, "in my name.' This actually means the full doctrine of Christ. So what are we all waiting for? There is much work to do.

Many people confuse the word 'in' with the word, 'With'. It is not a magic word. What Jesus was really saying was, "If you are born of my Spirit, and 'bear my name' then you will recieve what you ask for from my Father, who is also your Father. He also stated other reasons why people did not recieve. Some asked with impure motives, others asked with insufficient faith. God is not a liar, you have Him confused with satan.

jesus did not lie you have to ask if it in god's will. remember jesus knows what your going to ask him before you ask him in his name. but remember now it has to be in gods will and time. for the father knows all before you ask. 'ok it like this say you ask for something of jesus to do for you like to tell him to get a job for you. so that you can work. but the next day you hear that you did not get the job that you wanted . what that means is that jesus heard you but it was not in god's will for you to have that job. do you get what im saying.. also because he has bigger plans for you and because you may want something that it may not be the right time for what you asked for. it will come but it will come on god's time or when he thinks the time is right. that why people always say that if it god's will it will be if not oh well . guess it was not to be. because it on his time and not ours also remember don't get him mad now . god is not a genie you could ask but don't ask to much. hey also ask him if there is a reason why he did not do what you ask for. there's always a reason with god

Jesus said, "Believe me: I am in my Father and my Father is in me. If you can't believe that, believe what you see—these works. The person who trusts me will not only do what I'm doing but even greater things, because I, on my way to the Father, am giving you the same work to do that I've been doing. You can count on it. From now on, whatever you request along the lines of who I am and what I am doing, I'll do it. That's how the Father will be seen for who he is in the Son. I mean it. Whatever you request in this way, I'll do.
Praying "in Jesus' name" does not refer to some magic formula added to the end of a prayer. It means to pray in keeping with his character and concerns and, indeed, in union with him. The disciples, through their union with Christ, are taken up into his agenda. This agenda, as throughout his ministry, is to bring glory to the Father. This verse has been understood by some Christians to be a blanket promise that Jesus will give them whatever they want. Such idolatry of the self is the very opposite of eternal life. "Whatsoever we ask that is adverse to the interests of salvation, we do not ask in the name of the Savior". Rather, the promise is made to those who will pray in Jesus' name and for the glory of the Father. As such it is a great promise for the advance of God's purposes in oneself, in the church and in the world.

I don't know if He actually lied, maybe, like the first person said on here; perhaps man has tampered with the text-not to say Jesus ain't real, cuz I don't know that-who knows right? But I can DEFINITELY relate to your question, Ms. Rove! *nods heavily*
And , Mr. "The Violator", I think you need to take your comment and shove it. :) *mocks* "Ooh, you need to repent cuz you're spiritually ignorant"
**** outta here...*rolls eyes and makes a face*

Rove, I appreciate that you are really trying to learn about Jesus, but your question implies that you are testing God and he will not doing something for you, even in Jesus' name, if you are doing it in the wrong spirit. Also, approach him in a true spirit of love and faith, and ask for his will to be done, not yours.
