puppies are usually weaned around 2 / 3 weeks with some specialist puppy porridge (not the human stuff), which should be mixed with water, or goats milk. Never give puppies cows milk as their digestive systems cannot take it, and it will make them sick.

and will top themselves up from mom, but mom will start to want to spent more and more time away from them. By five weeks, she may not want to be bothered with them, as they will be getting little teeth. So let mom decide, she may just go in once a day to check up on them, but dont force her to stay with them if she doesnt want to. However, they shouldnt leave their litter brothers and sisters and go to their new homes until around 8 weeks.

If you are in the UK and you mean at what age can puppies go to their new homes, the Kennel Club recommends between 7 - 8 weeks.

All these people who say 12 weeks have obviously no conception of how totally impractical keeping a large litter of, say, 10 German Shepherds until they are 12 weeks old would be!!!!

in some places, it is illegal to sell of give away a pup under 8 weeks.
8 weeks is the soonest..10-12 weeks is more ideal, depending on how well developed and mature the puppies are.
If a mom rejects the puppies before 8 weeks, they should at least stay with their littermates until they are older.. they may not get everything they need from mom, but they still pick up alot of important social skills from their littermates.

On rare occasions I have let a pup go at 7 weeks, mainly when they are very well grown and independant at that age, and the new owner is a long way away. I stress, very rarely. 8 weeks is a perfect age for a well developed pup to start its new life as by then they are eager for attention and new experiences.

Some moms reject their puppies early, as little as 5 weeks and leave them to fend for themselves, this is sad because puppies need as much time as possible with their moms.
I say keep the puppies with mom until she lets them go, this is usually around 7 to 11 weeks. It builds confidence and security the longer a pup is with its mother. Also if mom rejects them early the litter should stay together as long as possible so I wouldnt let them go until they were 10 weeks old.

8 - 10 weeks is the safest! You also get them in their cute stage! I call it the "calender" stage. You know, when you get a puppy calender and all of them are adorable! :)
Be safe, and don't take it away any sooner!
To the first answerer -- I have a thumbs down fairy, too! We are awesome! They haven't found me yet for this answer, though. I keep my Q&A's hidden. That's so immature. Sheesh!

Children need time with their Mom's and siblings. At least 8 to 10 weeks is good. Remove them sooner and you can have some behavioral problems and some illness.
