My friend lives in NY state. We live very close to the Canadian border. Is it possible to cross the border with just a birth certificate? She does not have a license/permit (shes 17) or other ID. Thanks.

As a minor visiting Canada by land she can travel with a birth certificate, BUT she also need a letter of permission signed by both her parents allowing her to go and listing the specific dates and places and contact information. The letter should also say she is traveling with you, especially if you are 18, then you are an adult.

I am pretty sure that you are not required to have a passport, or any other specific I.D. it would be wise however to bring some kind of I.D. even if its not a birth certificate...however you might just find that you might just get waved in without any check or hassle, my buddy just came back from a road trip, and thats what happened to him...
