Only in 20GB, 60GB and 80GB versions. NTSC 20GB and 60GB have hardware (PS2's Emotion Engine and Reality Synthesizer chips) to deal with those games - they're the best for PS2 games - more than 95% of PS2 games supported. 80GB and all european versions run old games on software - around 80% of PS2 games are supported.
40GB version (both PAL and NTSC have no support for PS2 games).

Depends on the version that you're getting.

If you're getting the 20 or 60 gb version, almost all of the PS2/PSX games will work on the PS3 because those 2 versions have the emotion engine which was used on the PS2.

If you're getting the 80 gb version, most of the PS2/PS2 games will work. It doesn't have the emotion engine, but it will use software emulation to make PS2/PSX games backward compatible on the PS3.

If you're getting the 40 gb version, you CANNOT play PS2 games on the 40 gb version, but you can still play PSX games on the 40 gb version.

You can go here and enter the PSX/PS2 games that you want to know if it's playable on the PS3:

Yes - if you get the 80 gig PS3. But if you get the new - lower gig model (I think it's 40 gig) - I'm pretty sure PS2 games won't work.
