Both FAA rules and international aviation treaties require two pilots in all airplanes over 12,500 pounds. Each must be able to reach a complete set of basic flight controls at all times.
On long flights there is company policy based on the regulations that describes who may take a break, who can take a nap, go to the head, or whatever else needs to be done.

if the pilot takes a pee, and all the automatic controls fail, there is still the co-pilot to hold the joy stick. Well Fly-by-wire controls mean that the pilot and co-pilot have sidestick controllers and rudder pedals.
Do you share a car with somebody, so what happens when you chage over, you put on the hand brake, adjust the wing mirror and slide the seat up so you can reach the pedals. you don't have that opportunity in mid flight, and it i real dangerous to try and move the pilot suffewring from a heart attack away from the controls, whilst maintaning level flight.

There are offset colors on the wingtips as well as white strobes. The left side has a steady Red light and the right side has a steady Green or Aqua. This is so that when a pilot sees another aircraft at night , he can tell which direction it is heading. There is also a steady white light at the base of the tail by the exhaust port for the APU. The white strobes are to make it more noticable from a distance. There are bright white landing lights on the wings and nose gear. There are also red flashing red beacons on the top and bottom of the fuselage. These are mostly for movement on the ground, but also remain lit in flight to make the aircraft more noticable.

no, it's a redundant system so that in the case of mechanical failure, or a medical conditon affecting the pilot, the co pilot can safely assume control of the aircraft. In addition, that way, the pilot and co pilot can trade off if they get fatigued and don't have to change seats while in flight.

of course what you are sleepy isn't it you need an asst? trhats the purpose of it you need two for your co pilot :) hope it answers your questions :) and also for Long haul 12 hrs or more , total flight crew would increase making it a total of 4 of you or 6 since for a B747, there 3 on duty crews for a certain flight while usuually there are two for an Airbus A340 aircraft.

it mainly in case one of the 2 are incapatcitaed, but ive seen many a capt prop his foot up and tke a quick wink,,,, but it also is a chance for the right seat to get a little experiance as well also
