I do not believe in God. That is why I find science so important. I think that rather than hoping for something better, I think we should all try and make this world better for here and now. I do not think this life is just something to suffer through to get to heaven. I believe this is all we have. Although we can never make this world as good as the Bible says heaven is, I think we should do our best to make this world as heavenly as possible. We atheists genuinly do not believe in God, and that is why we try so hard to make this world better through the use of science. Why would you disagree with trying to make this world a better place because of your belief in God.

religous radicals are the reason wars exist. I wont fight you to get you to believe that evolution is a most probable event.
But religous zealots will kill you to make you believe in what they believe. The world and people have been here long before any religion. But everyone is entitled to believe in what they want, even if its wrong.

If you plot the "bettering" of this world alongside scientific progress, you would see that it does not correlate. If there was any correlation considering all the scientific progress shouldn't we have seen some increase in world goodness?

Without God, we have to make our own "purposes" (actually only goals) and why should one goal be any better than another as long as it feels good. Making the world a better place is a phrase that makes you feel good but fundamentally it is no better than dominating the world if that were to make you feel better. A secular morality is always based on how we feel.

Belief is an act of the intellect. We don't believe just to believe, we believe because we want to reach a goal. You don't believe because you don't want to find God. I believe because I do want to find God.

Making this world a better place is a very noble idea and quite commendable; provided, you are really doing that. But that is not really opposed to a belief in God. In fact, a belief in God is a better motive for doing that. This belief insists we love our neighbor BOTH in material and spiritual matters. We are actually required to make this world a better place. Science and belief in a God are not at odds with each other. Science can actually help us form a belief in God. It's true, the Kingdom of God is not of this world, but God does offer us everlasting life in the next. We can still use science toward that goal; and in many instances, we do.

This 'reality' is all that we know, and can be sure of - we can see it, touch it, feel it, listen to it, etc etc.
What happens when we die, is of no consequence to us - we do not know what is 'there' for sure. And certainly we cannot put our trust and faith in what religion says - because they have no clue whatsoever about it - because they have no evidence at all for anything they say. The Bible is not a book of truth and substance. Religion is one of the most biased things in this world, much like a car advertisement, saying this is the only car for you. Religions that promote themselves are obviously lying to us - with such threats as "Only if you believe in Jesus Christ - will you be saved!".

The one thing we can be sure of - is that everyone goes through the same life process - of being born here, living a life here, and then dying - meaning we all go to the same place - no matter what our belief system is.
We have to treat this reality as the only place we live in - because we can make this place better and more peaceful than what it is now. More harmonious, etc etc.
And we can reap the rewards thereof right away...

That method has been tried so many times. Seriously, this is getting old. You think science will prove that God doesn't exist? Buena suerte con eso. (Good luck with that). I believe that you exist although I've never seen you. I don't disagree with trying to make the world a better place. That should be everybody's goal.
I live in this world to. But if you think I'm gonna waste my time living in a world where there's no "Head Honcho", you are sadly mistaken.

Science makes the world a better place, ha, that is a joke. Why don't you go ask the people of Nagasaki and Hiroshima if they think science made the world a better place.

Yes, science has made improvements in life. But to believe that is the goal of science is ridiculous.

your question is not about what spiritual path you follow in this life but making this world a better place for all humanity, which would be great if we all came together to do just that and stop all the wars about religion.
I dont think that love between one another is a fairy tale or out of reach for our minds to comprehend.

The bible contains very little in the way of details about heaven, unless you are reading one of the more 'progressive' interpretations that have been published lately.

Most of what is assumed about it, is gleaned from novels and artwork that have moved into the collective Theist psyche.

Atheist.

Hold up wait a minute. Now we CHRISTIANS want to make the world a better place. Now, for you to critize and say we do not shame on you. God tells us to treat others with respect and to do all you can for others, even if your not going to get anything in return (e.g PEACE). Now, no one can disprove god, NO ONE CAN. Now, I feel you have the right to your beliefs as I do, and you should understand that to each his own, we will make up or own descisions, and it is sad to think that this is it... even if you believe in something like reincarnation you remember nothing about your life, now when you go to heaven you remember your loved ones, and you have no pain, as strange as it sounds, I rahter believe in that nothing at all.

I dont science alone can unlock the answers to the mysteries of existence. I think Albert Einstein said it best "Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind". I am aware of a spiritual reality as I have seen it thru my use of entheogens. I think the substance DMT is the better than science to understanding life. It is produced in the brain during sleep and Near Death experiences thru the Pineal gland. i was once an atheist until taking this....the experience was so profound that it still give me chills thinking about it. I think the pineal is the seat of conciseness, the life force enters and leaves thru it with DMT acting as a transport in and out of planes of existence.
