Before i say anything this is not something that is done.......... but as an idea it would work. You could take everyones DNA at birth and anyone from overseas should have theirs taken as a condition of entry to the UK.

This should be used from criminal investigation only.

Everyone (near as damn it) has a DNA sample taken following arrest in the UK. Also people who work in environments that could result in cross contamination of crime scenes have their DNA held on a record (i.e police officers, scenes of crime officers etc).

If have no objection to having my DNA held on any record.

As for the records security what do people think will happen?
Mr / Mrs top shot hacker gets hold of your record. It shows your name, date of birth, maybe parents details...............and the fact you have DNA!

The inland revenue have more info on us than that!

Or are you scared they will clone you?!? :)

hell no they can kiss my ****, it should only be taken as and when the plod have enough circumstantial evidence against a person when investigating a crime no exception , this is getting ridiculous if people think that the government while not misuse this information if everyone is on a data base, and so what if the YES lot think that the plod will catch criminals any quicker (which they wont) because the justice system in this country is on the side of the criminal and they will back on the street to commit further crime, come on you lot wake up from wonderland this is the real world

edit: their seems to be some right old divvies answering this question, people seem to think that when you commit a violent crime you leave your DNA at the scene well not allways, you can commit rape, burglary, assault and still not leave your DNA behind so what good is the data base then.

I have to disagree with this, Britain seems to want to be a Big Brother State, were every individual freedom we have is slowly being eroded from under us. Only when charged with a criminal offence should DNA be taken. Britain has to accept that it has signed up to the charter of Basic Human Rights and forcibly taking DNA at birth would be a breach of that

I think its a great idea. Think of themoney that could be saved in police investigations if everyone was on the DNA database. Crimes could be solved more quickly (providing there was DNA evidence) and people may think twice before commiting a crime as there would be more chance of them getting caught.
The drawback would be that we are already short of space in jails and if there were more inmates, the public purse would be stretched to it's limits subsidising their upkeep in the jails.

Most simple answer and best solution(in my eyes). Yes I agree as if you've done nothing wrong it can reduce the wrongly accused from having to serve time, of course also help catch criminals faster. But it should be optional people should choose to be on it or not, but if you commit a crime(that is commit and not taken in for questioning only to be found Innocent) and are guilty I think it should be compulsory so it can help with repeat offenders like newly released prisoner.

I'm against any DNA being held unless you've been convicted of a crime. It's shocking that the police can hold practically anyone's now legall.

I disagree, DNA is not 100% foolproof and as other people have said no data base is totally secure. You know how easy it is to hack in to a pc, even Government data bases are not secure and what happens when somebody decides to sell the information?.

I see no harm in it at birth. Its not your DNA that will get you in trouble its the way your brought up. It also saves a lot of problems with lost children and some health issues.
