UH HELL-O PEOPLE this isn't hard at all DOGS DUH they are so sweet and smart they LISTEN!!!, unlike cats they come in more shapes and sizes, more breed names, you can teach them how to do tricks, and cats are just dont make me say it ANYWAY my point is DOGS ARE THE BEST AND WILL ALWAYS BE!

I like them both but cats suit my husband and I better because we're not home a lot and our five cats can entertain each other, whereas dogs must be walked and exercised. I know people who manage it, by either crating the dog and taking care of it when they get home, or hiring a dog walking service but the first one seems too cruel to me and the second one is not an option in my rural area.
I think personality-wise dogs are much more needy, just begging for attention and a lot of people like that. Cats, while many are still affectionate (one of ours, in fact, we call our 'puppycat' is a big whiny suck-up and we adore him) seem to be much more independent and self-reliant.
It's up to what you expect out of them, and what you expect to offer of yourself.
Choose wisely and good luck.

I have 2 dogs and 1 cat, they all greet me when I come home
with their tails wagging and sit with me at night to watch TV. My cat doesn't need walking, he poops in his litter box and I can leave him at home for a few days alone. The cat's a lot less work but I enjoy having the dogs and wouldn't be without them.

Dogs. Being pack animals, they have the sense of......let's just call it "community"...of working together.
I have had a few of cats over my lifetime. Don't have one now, not for about 20 years. Do I miss having one? Obviously not.
I have not been without a dog in the house since I was about 5 years old.
I choose having a dog as I want a companion. "Someone" who is always ready to share with me....."human" stuff or "dog" stuff....wants to go for a walk, runs to me everytime I put on shoes, wants to investigate, wants to play with balls, tug toys, soccer, do agility, go hiking, camping, play in creeks and lakes, search for varmits, help water the plants, help rake leaves, go visiting friends, lay under my chair as I type this, lay on my lap when I watch tv....
"I am the cat that walks alone...." was this Kipling?

A Dog would follow you around, trust you, be your companion, play with you, the list goes on.
A Cat will hide when you come home, come to you when you have cat food or treats, and be totally independant.
You decide.
I like dogs.

I like them both! Dogs are more energetic, playful, and sensitive. Cats are smaller, more independent, less work, and can sleep on your head more easily.
