This is from the book, "Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats"...

"A mixture of 1/2 oz of almond or olive oil and 400 IU vitamin E (from a capsule) makes a mild healing treatment for either cats or dogs. Blend them in a dropper bottle and warm the mixture to body temperature by immersing in hot water. Holding the ear flap up, put about 1/2 dropperful in the ear. Massage the ear canal well so that you hear a fluid sound. After a minute of this, let the animal shake its head. The gently clean out the opening (not deep into the ear) with cotton swabs to remove debris and excess oil."

My Bonnie has this dark oily discharge in her ears. She as been checked by the vet and it is not mites or an infection. This is how I do with her using the above information:

One half ounce is equal to 1 tablespoon. So you are using about 1/2 tablespoon in each ear. To me that just sounds like a lot for a cat. So I do about 2 - 3 drops, massage and let Bonnie shake. If you have someone to help you, do both ears, massage and let kitty shake. I'm lucky, Bonnie is a petite kitty, so I can hold her myself and get both ears. Then I take a cotton pad and clean around the base of her ears and head, then use swabs to get the excess out of those little crevices, but not down in the ear.

Hope this helps. Just to be sure, next vet visit have kitty's ears check to be sure it is not ear mites or an infection.

Purrs to you and kitty.

i think of it quite is ultimate to allow the vet sparkling your cat's ears or permit the puppy sparkling its very own ears. yet while cant take care of to pay for to get the cat to the surgeon, i assume you ought to use a cotton bud and attempt to no longer try this too in lots of situations because of fact the cat will possibly no longer like it. And it could finally end up you getting harm on the grounds which you tried to maintain on carry on the cat. as quickly as each and every 2 months will do.

It may have ear mites. They irritate the ears and cause more secretions take him to the vet and get some drops the discharge should stop the vet may clean the ears out too. I won't touch my cats ears because their ears are so sensetive I worry I might do some damage

I use old cotton nightgowns for rags to clean my house. So I just wet a piece of that with witch hazel and "scour" around in the ear. As long as you are just using your finger you cannot hurt the cat. And strangely the cats don't seem to mind that very much.
