what will happen? lets say it starts as a sinus infection? will it spread? just curious.

most infections in the body, if left untreated, will indeed spread. A sinus infection for instance, depending on the causative organism, can travel to the brain and to the heart, causing serious illness or even death.

Infections will spread if it overcomes your natural defenses. If you have an infection, likely it overcame the first barriers- ie. intact skin was breached. But whether or not it enters your blood stream or creeps into your brain or develops into a pocket of pus (abscess) depends on your body's immune system's ability to fight it off, using your white blood cells. Whether or not your body's immune system is able to fight off and prevent spread depends on:
1. how strong your immune system is
2. how strong the infectious agent (virus, bacteria, fungus) is

It's really just a microscopic war. When it looks like the bug is winning, you'll need medications to prevent spread of your infection.
