I can't find and Van Gogh paintings like that, but it does sound like Picasso's 'Old Guitarist' from his Blue Period, which is much more releasitic/representational than the cubist works for which he's best known.

Picasso made some but I don't remember any musical instruments in pictures by van Gogh.
