The guards who protect His Royal Highness, who are they employeed by? Do they carry guns? Etc?

The Swiss guard are employed by the Vatican and they are indeed armed and trained to deal with terriost attacks on the Vatican and the Pope.

My guess is that they are Swiss Guards very well trained as for pay I think think they make a good buck.
