Well, actually sometimes they are reading it. Keep in mind a couple of practical things. People do not get married in front of a pulpit. The pastor isn't behind the pulpit. They are out nearer to the couple and they don't have a plus to put stuff down as they read it. Many people have a small Bible that they use for weddings. Yes, some pastors DO read a passage or two from the Bible during the ceremony. There is another reason to have it open. Some people actually insert a slip of paper that has the wedding vows typed on it and place it in the Bible simply to keep it in place. It makes it easier for the ceremony and looks better than someone reading from a piece of paper. Also, some people aren't reading from a Bible, they are reading from a Book of Worship which is has the order of the ceremony in it. I hope this helps you.

Usually (the weddings I have been to) the Pastor reads a scripture from the Bible. Like Ruth etc..Then they have the ceremony so they don't goof up..They sure wouldn't want to mess up your wedding by forgetting something. They usually have a copy of the "vows" if the couple have written their own so that if someone forgets they can prompt them very quietly.

Hello, Well, what is advised is No. If you are already married and neither is a christian but one becomes a christian through the marrige, then it is advised to stay eventhough one of the two is not a christian... Now, I can imagine the struggle you are having with this issue because there are many solid people with good values even though they do not partake in Christianity, and as you say, you feel as though this may be your soul mate, and I feel for you both. Maybe what you can do is expose him to the faith if you have not already, and to give it time, which may be difficult to do, and plenty of it. But the rule God has placed down to us on this topic is not to marry a non Christian and I am sure the only reason is that it will get in the way of your thing with God, and thats no good, and we have to believe him when he says that will happen. Nothing in life is more important than your walk with God.....Nothing

He does not act as if he is. Often the pastor will read from the Bible. I've never noticed if he has the Bible open during the entire ceremony.

The vows are on a sheet of paper stuck in his Bible.
The Bible opened stands for the marriage founded on living the Word of God.

Chances are that the book you are seeing is not the Holy Bible, but the Book of Common Prayer, which contains the wedding ceremony with the vows, etc.
If it IS the Bible, he is probably going to read verses chosen by the bridal couple, or from I Corinthians 13.

Our Minister read from the Bible during our marriage service. We met prior to the ceremony and we selected passages that we wanted read.

Just a guess, but his bible is probably open to Ephesians and the verses about love being patient and kind, slow to anger etc.
