Stop making excuses. If your club is failing, look for other real reasons & improve upon them.

As a business owner I can somewhat understand. I believe business owners should decide how to run their businesses based on business climate. If the business does not fill a need then there will be no income - pure & simple. I personally do not go to establishments that allow smoking. My choice. I let my $$$ talk for me.
I have read in the US when many cities/states banned smoking in public locations it was done to protect the health of the non-smoker. If a pub is able to protect the health of non-smokers & still allow smoking in the establishment then I say go for it without government interference. Once employees file enough worker's compensation claims for smoke related illnesses, the establishment will perhaps reconsider.
I figure it is just a matter of time before some creative prosecutor or officer files assault with a deadly weapon charge against a smoker for fouling the air near a non-smoker. I can imagine the jury being presented the tons of scientific evidence to prove the smoke is a deadly weapon.
I do not smoke. I do not wish to be around smokers - but can't seem to avoid it completely. I do not want someone smoking around my asthmatic kids nor anyone else's kids. BUT if an adult chooses to smoke, it is their choice. If knowing full well all the complications from smoking, an adult still decides he/she would rather take several years off their life it is an adult decision. Just do NOT ask me to contribute towards their medical care (a very conservative decision).
Lift the ban. I would prefer the smokers choose a much faster method of suicide but they should be allowed to make their own decisions.

For or against smoking the result of the ban can be seen in many local reports in the media and the prognosis by the LVA who state that up to 50% of establishments will be forced to close their doors by 2010 as a direct result of the ban.

The fact that the bamn came into effect during the summer months has not had an immediate effect on clientele - the winter is now here and already the signs are that it will be hard time for pubs and clubs as the cold, dark nights take their toll on those willing to sit outside in the inclement weather.

The shelves in my local supermarket are almost empty of booze and takeaway meals. A clear indication of things to come.

As for the ban being lifted - it will never happen regardless of the cost in closed establishments.

I don't own a Pub... and I don't smoke. BUT...

I do not support a smoking ban on "Pubs, Clubs, Bars or Gin joints."

It should be up to the owner of the establishment if smoking is permitted, not the Government. The owner's decision will ultimately be made by the patrons. If they don't want to go to a smoke filled bar, they'll choose to go elsewhere.

This is a good example of why I vote Republican. The incremental technique of Liberals is well illustrated here. The Government (via Liberal politics) slowly but surely makes laws designed to control your life.
Inch... by inch; Law... by law; they gain control of as much aspect of your life as they possibly can.

Warm regards,
Douglas

Post Script: If you've voted for a Democrat or a Liberal you've gotten what you deserve. If not.... sorry mate be sure and vote Conservative.

Post post Script: If the ban was lifted, how many bars would have a "Self Imposed" smoking ban... not damn many, because there weren't any BEFORE the ban!

In many pubs and clubs the customers are drinking outside and are causing more of a nuisance. I cannot see this government changing the law and perhaps it is time that we make smoking illegal anywhere. It is a distasteful habit and the beneficial effect upon the health of society would outweigh any adverse affect upon our human rights. However, with a potential loss of huge tax revenue no government would make that decision.

i couldn't agree more with the people who say its up to the owners of the Establishment, who are the government to tell these people how to run their own places, if people don't like smoke then go elsewhere its as simple as that, the ban should be lifted but it wont, i mean the government make enough money out of taxing cigs don't they, don't here them complaining on that score

well you really need to have a good look and think about your club. if your club is about to be colsed down just because of the smoking ban, then i think perhaps your club is not very inviting, any good and lacks the reason why people enjoy going out for a drink!
im not slagging your club off, but it does make you think!!

spend some time on an oncology ward and then ask if the ban should be lifted, how much evidence do you need from the medical experts of the dangers of smoking, and even more dangerous is the second hand smoke, you club must be in an awful predicament if the only thing they rely on to keep open is, smoking.for the betterment of your local community it is time it was totally closed.

At long last I can go into a pub or club without leaving with the stench of other peoples smoking habit and I love it, all of my life I have had to endure this foul smelling fog whenever I went out for an evening, people who used to smoke in these places had absolutely no consideration for my comfort or health, so how on Earth can they expect any sympathy from me, many times I have not gone to functions because of people smoking and I have missed out on many nice evenings because of it, in my opinion if smokers choose not to go to pubs and clubs because of the ban then so be it, these people will return when they get used to and except the idea and most of these establishments will survive, they may even have to make drink cheaper to attract new customers which is another bonus, I can now go in cafe`s, restaurant`s, shop`s cinema`s.public transport, phone boxes, pub`s, club`s, and many closed in market`s without having to dodge that horrible stink, I no longer have to suffer sore throats and watery eyes and I can go where I want to go , without some inconsiderate smoker ruining it for me, I think that smokers who have never even thought about the non smoker and carried on regardless of how it effects others have bought this on themselves, I am really happy.
I am 59 and I think that I have suffered enough from this useless harmful and anti social affliction.

Message to John Belushi.
The fact that I am still here is because I have tried to keep myself away from the dangers of other people smoking, smoking however did kill both of my parents, One aged 54 and the other aged 72 and although this is a reasonable age my mother spent the last 5 years of her life using a machine to help her to breath, so carry on smoking, you never know, that may be your fate in a few years time, I do not hate smokers but I do pity them, I am controlled by nothing, can you say the same?.

It's just the price for progress......It seems that drugs are now more socially acceptable in some venues.

Probably it would be best for the government to ban tobacco all together once and for all and find another revenue source.
