If you require a root canal, your dentist will refer you to a specialist called an "endodontist" who can perform the root canal. Some dentists can also perform this treatment.
It usually takes 2-3 treatments--the first is where they drill out the decay, into the root of the tooth. They pack the tooth with a special treatment. The next treatment, they remove the dead tissue, clean the tooth and fill it--they will possibly create a mold for a crown. The third treatment, they might create a crown for the tooth and cement it in place.
If you have a good endodontist, it's not as painful as you might hear people say. Typically, the cost is around $1,000, unless you require special crown work, then it could be more.
I've had 3 root canals, none of which were especially painful--just time consuming and costly.

The take the nerves out of your tooth and replace it with some very very thin "rods". The tooth, because it has no nerves now, it is dead, so sometimes, the top part of the tooth can darken slightly. It is no worse that any other dental procedure because u will be numbed (I have had a LOT of dental work!) Just because u have fillings, does not mean that you will have to have root canals in those teeth. The best things you can do for your mouth health is floss at LEAST once a day, preferrably twice, get a water pick and use that daily, and brush twice with colgate complete. I know i sound like a lecturing dentist, but as I said, I have had many dental issues myself, and these things are working now that I practice them regularly!!

It's for if the nerve in your tooth is either exposed or the tooth is so painful the only thing they can do is a root canal. This is basically just killing all the nerves to that tooth and then the refill the tooth and they can even put a new crown on if you need one.
With novacaine, no it's not painful. I had one a few months ago because I busted a piece of a molar off with something I ate and had to go get it done. It took less than an hour and as long as you don't panic from having your mouth open so long, you will be just fine.

A root canal is when they drill a hole through your tooth from the top, after that I think they remove the root and then refill the hole in the tooth. So make sure they use LOTS of novacaine before they even start. Damn thing hurts like a son of B*tch if they don't.
I know from experience. I don't know if they do root canals on teeth with fillings. I think they just pull the tooth out.

I've had several. After a time decay ruins the root of the tooth and in order to save it, a special dentist called an endodontist will need to do a root canal. It sound scary but they give you plenty of meds to control pain. It just takes a lot of time. Your best bet is to take care of your teeth so you won't need one. But if you do, it's not a big deal.

Go to the dentist every year, get your teeth cleaned at the dentist (the hygienist will do this) every six months, floss and brush your teeth regularly. Then you will not need a root canal.
Your dentist will suggest a root canal if you need one. Try googling it too. If he does not answer all of your questions get another dentist.

I am no dentist, but I suggest you talk with your own.
He or she will know exactly how to handle the situation, and they will not preform it if it is not necessary, or safe.
Teeth are like trees, in the sense that they have roots. If a root to a tooth is damaged or dies, they take it out and replace it with something called endofile.
It's a scary procedure, no doubt. But I know several people who've had them, and they've lived to talk about it. Definitely don't procrastinate with the issue, because it can become infected, and if left untreated, can become more serious than just a rootcanal.
Have it checked out :)

I dont know much, but you get a root canal when you dont take care of your teeth. What they do, I think, is do something like a filling, except to your teeth's roots. They don't have to do it, but it does help keep your mouth healthy!

I'm pretty sure that they are things that they drill into your teeth or something. My friend tells me that they go into your gums but I think she also said that you only need it if u drink 10 bottles of pop a day and eat a lot of candy. I don't think you should worry about it because my friend knows everything about everything and she has more candy than that and she doesn't need a root canal.
