I'm into Classical and New Age music mostly, but I do like Velvet Revolver, Rob Zombie (but your mom may not like Zombie, he's a little weird), NIN, Wolfmother.
Also, if you have an alternative radio station in your area, or get satellite radio (like XM radio or Cirius), listen to that to find bands that you like. If not, watch MTV or VH1, or ask friends/people you know listen to alternative for their opinions.
