well i was offered the position but got a call saying my credit check came bad, but the next day my references started to get calls about me, what does this mean. I heard references check is the last step of a job verification is this true.

Sorry for you, the people doing the reference check must not have been told about the credit check result. Maybe they are considering you anyhow.

Did they say they withdrew the offer when they called about the credit check? It could be possible that a separate section of the company does the reference checks from the credit checks, and that they didn't communicate between one another before they contacted you.

On the other hand, they might be checking your references to see if you're a generally responsible person who just fell on hard times. In that case, you might still be in the running. It's really to the company's discretion.

Suze Orman's books are very helpful with tips to improve your credit score, and she talks in plain language that's really easy to understand.

if you were trying to get in to a finance, insurance, mortgage, real estate job they always do a credit check and NO you didnt get the job if you didnt pass

yes 100% some companies require that your credit is good because of what you will be dealing with (for example $, credit cards etc..)
