Hi and congratulations!
I would definitely go for the nice wedding DRESS!! and the etched gold band.
Maybe someday, when finances are better, a 5th or 10th anniversary, you can get an anniversary band with diamonds. But, you will NEVER be able to relive your wedding day, so go with the dress!
Good luck and I hope you have a beautiful wedding day!

Which is more important to you? Have you always dreamed of wearing a white wedding dress? Or would you feel a little empty looking at a plain band?
Frankly, I would prefer to have *some* kind of wedding dress. I don't like to wear pants, so I would at least wear a dress. And you can easily find a white dress on eBay or at Macy's or whatever for under $100. It's hard for me to believe that the difference in price between a wedding dress and a wedding ring with 0.5 ctw diamonds is the same. It seems like you'd be able to wear *some* kind of nice dress and still be able to afford the ring.
I bought a new wedding dress on eBay that was $50 including shipping. I think you can probably find some sort of a wedding dress. If money is so tight that you can't find a nice dress without going far out of your budget, I'd say you probably shouldn't be buying the fancy ring either.

I am proud of you that are are prioritizing and budgeting My husband gave a choice I could have a half carat diamond or a honeymoon. I chose the honeymoon and got a quarter carat.
Look in the thrift stores or on eBay you can get a nice dress or informal gown for much less money in a bridal shop.
You can go in boutiques and get a very nice dress or gown.
Or just get a white formal dress at Kohl's or Macy's something like that.
If you want the diamonds you can wear a casual outfit but I think for your wedding white or cream would be very nice and you can even get a nice skirt with a top as well. Look for these items at the stores I listed above.
Whatever you decide it will be special because you are being practical and prudent and you are not going to get yourself in debt a wonderful foundation for your marriage. I wish you all the best.

go for the dress. then, gradual save money for the next 5 yrs and get a different ring to celebrate your 5th anniversary. you can wear the new ring stacked with your gold etched band or put the gold etched band on the ring finger of the right hand. i've seen a .5 carat eternity band before and it's not so impressive that it is worth forgoing a beautiful dress for your photos. besides, you can even sell your dress after the event and put some of the earnings towards your new ring in the future. we bought a 1/3 ct engagement ring and plain, thin wedding band when we got married at 21 with the agreement ahead of time that we would buy a bigger ring on the 5th anniversary when we can afford it rather than going into debt for jewelry. well, it's been 4.5 yrs and i'm starting to look for an eternity band that fits my adult lifestyle.

It depends on what you want for your ceremony. If you want the dress, you can always save ($5 a month is still saving!) and buy an anniversary band when you have the cash.
Do you have to have a NEW dress? I do not believe that wearing a 'used' dress is bad luck or anything else. You may be able to go to thrift shops and find them oh so cheaply, and have it dry cleaned. Some bridal shops will rent them, and at least once a year David's has a $99 sale. Of course, there's always E-Bay. All of the major department stores have formalwear that you may be able to find something spectacular, and on sale.
If you're near a zales (or othre jewlery) outlet (or maybe they have a website) - OMG they have such nice things so cheap!
You may still be able to worm both of them out of that budget.
You need to figure out the pros and cons of each and do what is best for you. Wish I could tell you what to do. I don't have much to offer in reality since I don't know what your budget is :)
Anyway, best of luck and congratulations

Go for the dress. As you get older, you can always add a diamond to the band, but you can never go back and redo your dress or your pictures. You get a ring either way, and you can have it engraved to make it more special. I would definitely do the dress. Its a once-in-a-lifetime thing (hopefully!) and you will always be able to upgrade your ring later. On your wedding day and in pictures, you will want to look beautiful and look and feel like a bride. If you wait, you could get a new and better ring on your tenth, twentieth, etc anniversary, and that could be something fun to look forward to. Get the dress.

This would be easier to answer if I had an idea of what kind of budget youy had, but even with very little there is no reason that you cannot have both. You can buy used wedding dresses that are beautiful at discount bridal shops for as low as $100 dollars and even less than that at second hand stores, and some of them even still have the tags on them. Rings you can always upgrade later as you go, but your wedding day will only come once if your lucky. Congradulations and the best of wishes to you and your new husband.

It depends on which is more important to you. You may regret not having the dress and typical traditional pictures with you in it....but that IS just for one day....while your wedding band, you'll enjoy forever. That's a tough one. I think I'd still go w/ the dress even though it's only for one day because I think I would regret it later on. But you can always upgrade your wedding band - no biggie. You'd be surprised how little you think about your wedding band after you're married. It's just an everyday part of you.

The ring is forever. I can remember thinking at the end of my wedding day...that was all? I had a great time, but it seemed like a LOT of work for just 1 day...kind of like cooking for 2 days for thanksgiving dinner and having everyone gobble it up in about 10 minutes. The memory has lasted, but I get to look at my ring every day.
Whatever decision you make though will be right for you :)
Have you thought about going to 2nd hand stores and checking out dresses that way or e-bay?

why don't you go somewhere in the middle? get a less expensive, but nice ring.. maybe .25 carats, and a simple white dress. you can find cheap dresses. unless you are okay with wearing black pants and a shirt to your wedding? If I were you, I'd adjust the budget a bit more so you can have a little of both worlds. congrats! ;)
