alcoholism is classified as a disease by the medical community. it doesn't matter how much, or how often one drinks, a true alcoholic cannot stop completely on his own. there are heavy drinkers, that are not alcoholics, and there are alcoholics - like me - who have 2 drinks every once in a while, but who can't stop completely. you can be an alcoholic, without society considering you to be one; not all of us pass out, miss work, drive drunk, piss away money, or drink massive amounts.

There are several definitions. Socially, someone may be considered an alcoholic if they drink several times a week, and they drink to get drunk. Also if their drinking habits interfere with work, family, friends, and basic daily life, that person is considered to have a drinking problem and may be addicted (either physically or psychologically) to alcohol.

The Journal of the American Medical Association defines alcoholism as "a primary, chronic disease characterized by impaired control over drinking, preoccupation with the drug alcohol, use of alcohol despite adverse consequences, and distortions in thinking."

The DSM-IV (the standard for diagnosis in psychiatry and psychology) defines alcohol abuse as repeated use despite recurrent negative consequences, such as hangovers, missing work, injuries, getting in trouble with the law, etc.. basically a person who is unable to control his/her drinking habits; further defining alcohol dependence as alcohol abuse combined with tolerance, withdrawal, and an uncontrollable urge to drink.

Some of the people who goes to a bar everyday to drink and gets at least tipsy but spends like $20 dollars on say dollar beers!
An alcoholic is someone who gets comfort from drinking, and relies on drinking to help mentally support them by taking them away from their problems . Having a good time on the weekends is not a drunk, and having a glass of wine, beer, or shot a day I wouldnt consider one either.
