Prognosis is good.
"Post-operative monitoring of the patient is especially important to ensure that they begin to use the surgically repaired leg. Most dogs will begin to bear weight within the first 1 to 2 weeks after FHNO. This schedule can be delayed, especially if there has been significant muscle weakening leading up to the surgery. In many cases, your veterinarian will recommend a course of post-operative physiotherapy exercises to help strengthen the muscles. The best physiotherapy of all is having the dog walk and run on the leg and this should be encouraged as soon after surgery as possible"

Lots of R and R then start with small walks with the vet's okay. In the meantime get some yucca from the natural grocer or natural pet food store. This is a natural anti-inflamitory that can be used safely with vet meds. It gives thim that extra little boost. Also having him on a high quality food with no corn, wheat or soy will make a big diffrence! For now mix in some goats milk for a bit more protein and to make it taste yummy. I hope this helps. Good luck and God bless.

Unfortunately this is common in Yorkies, prevention of the disease is made possible only through genetics. In other words, affected animals should not be bred. All breeding stock should have their hips xrayed before being bred and have their hips certified clear at one year of age. This will eliminate any mildly affected dogs from the breeding program. Mild cases of LPD can go completely unnoticed during the dog's growth period so xrays are a must to prevent the accidental use of an affected dog. It is also advised that any dog that has produced an LPD affected dog or littermates of an LPD affected dog should not be used in a breeding program. If LPD has been detected in your breed, the breeder should use extreme caution when it comes to her breeding program. Be responsible and do your part in eradicating this horrible disease from your breed by contacting the breeder.
One of the best ways to rehab from Legg Perthes surgery is by using an under-water treadmill. By being under water, dogs are unable to ‘favour’ a particular leg forcing them to really work and stretch the hurt leg, and recovery can be up to 12 months.
You can find a dog hydrotherapy centre on google, there are numerous pools around the UK, I know an excellent one in Somerset.
