it was to dedicate a cemetery. beyond that just the most famous speech by Lincoln. FYI dont trust people who dont know whats they are talking about. the speech was made DURING THE WAR, not after. Lincoln was shot a fews days after the war ended. Hardly enough time to write a speech, get on a train, go to Gettysburg, get back on a train, get dressed, go to the theater.... get shot and die. (the education system in this country is abysmal)

It was given at Gettysburg after the battle had been fought there during the War Between the States. A war which continued on for two more years. It is Lincoln's most remembered speech and is also another example of how he could draw from his knowledge of history. A speech containing almost the same points was delivered by the Greek general Pericles at the dedication of an Athenian burial ground during the Peloponnesian Wars, five hundred years before the birth of Christ.

It was a speach after the war was over. It was an attempt to heel the wounds of civil war.
