Now I lay me down to sleep.
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
If I should die before I wake,
I pray the Lord my soul to take.

I have found this good night prayer somewhat disturbing, but there are children in war zones and living in very hard conditions.

I would rather make a child to talk his/her own thoughts and guide the child about God's grace and how to pray

1. Acknowledge all wrong doings
2. Appealing for His forgiveness
3. Affirming the belief that Jesus can and will save us.
4. Asking Jesus to take control of one's life and change it for His purposes
5. Accepting the responsibility for living God's will for us.
6. Ask protection and wisdom
7. Thank Him.

IF the child has come to know the love and mercy of the one true God, and salvation of the eternal soul thru His Son, Jesus, then what, exactly, would you find "wrong" with this bedtime prayer?

This poem, like Ring Around The Rosey, was written in a time when children really didn't know if they'd live to grow up. I believe it could have been comforting for them to feel God would take a personal interest in them if they didn't make it through the night.

At the time that the prayer was created, Yes. Death happened more often than now. Cholera, small pox, plague, malnutrition, SIDS.

when my kids were little i let them say a prayer before bed, but it was slightly different.

now i lay me down to sleep
i pray the lord my soul to keep
may angels watch me through the night
and wake me to the morning light

a little less scary.
bright blessings to you

Of course!!!! It lets them know that if they die before they wake. They have asked Jesus to take soul to Heaven. It is meant to be a comfort to them.

In a time when most children didn't live to see adulthood, I suppose such a prayer would in fact be somewhat helpful.

I don't know anyone who uses that anymore.

But what is wrong with remembering when we go to sleep at night that our lives are in God's hands not ours?
