Well I'm not sure what your asking - not sure you know what your asking.

The UK post code is a string of characters added to the address of every building in the country which are unique to that building or that block of buildings.

If it is written correctly on each letter it allows the mail companies to use a computer to read the code and then sort the mail to speed it on it's way to the correct destination.

Therefore it follows that in the UK there are thousands and thousands of different postcode and if you want a specific one you need to tell us a specific address - there is not just one post code for a any whole city/town

It is also used by many other companies in the UK to determine specific areas - for instance car insurance companies use the post code to determine the risk in the area you live and amend the payment accordingly.

Also delivery companies use it with a computer to work out the best route for the delivery truck to avoid covering the same roads twice.

Go to the postcode finder website and search for common street names such as High Street, Church Road or Station Road in different cities. This should reveal several full postcodes. A "city postcode" may run out into the surrounding countryside perhaps 30 miles away from its urban core. It will cover the area efficiently served by the main depot where mail is sorted pre-delivery.

The codes in greater London are relatively complex and some used there are in unconventional formats. The London postal district is smaller than the administrative area of greater London.

It is a UK post code, similar to the American 'zip code'. The UK post code is more specific than the USA zip code. Where are you looking for - you can find all UK post codes on the Royal Mail website. Just Google Royal Mail postcode (suburb/street). Ignore Nic, she is incorrect that a UK postcode 'does not exist'. Odd she says that!!!! It does!!!!!

the UK post code system works by assigning every street a particular code, so you'll need to find the post code of the individual street you want to send something to.

Postal, Area, ZIP, CEDEX codes etc are shown when you look up a town on multimap, or other location website. You can even find them on Google maps.
