Self-righteousness is a sin. There is no-one righteous, not even one (except for Jesus). Unless we admit our sinfulness and seek forgiveness at the foot of the cross, all our "good deeds" are like filthy rags before a holy and righteous God.
Jesus said "The meek shall inherit the earth", not the arrogant, the self-righteous, the "holier-than-thou" brigade. Humility is a quality that pleases God. Pride does not.

Jesus was teaching about people who thought that they could appear before the Holy God of Heaven clothed in the filthy rags of their own self righteous deeds and be justified when in reality ALL have sinned and need to confess and ask for the forgiveness that comes from accepting the sacrifice that Jesus has made for them on the cross of calvary.
Today some believers read that passage and say in their hearts
"Thank you Lord that I'm not like that self-righteous Pharisee because I go to a church where they teach about Jesus and they have all of their doctrines right."
instead of saying "Thank you Lord for the gift of your Son and the faith to accept it as payment for my sins".

It means:
In the gift of His Son for our redemption, God has shown how high a value He places upon every human soul, and He gives to no man liberty to speak contemptuously of another. We shall see faults and weaknesses in those about us, but God claims every soul as His property--His by creation, and doubly His as purchased by the precious blood of Christ. All were created in His image, and even the most degraded are to be treated with respect and tenderness. God will hold us accountable for even a word spoken in contempt of one soul for whom Christ laid down His life. {MB 56.3}

It means very simply that those that carry the big Bible and are constantly trying to impress upon people how Christian they are will someday be humbled.
It is the humble man that knows he is a sinner, nothing more, and relies on God's mercy and grace.
it is the humble man that is a servant of God.

It means that God knows everything we do, so don't get too stuck on yourself or your achievements...don't judge others...don't look down on others...don't think you're better than another just because you go to church and pay your tithes.
It means to LIVE your faith, don't PRETEND it.

Real religion is personal.
There is nothing to show off, only a commitment to yourself is important.
