There are three community relationships defined by symbiosis. Symbiosis means living together.
In mutualism, both species benefit like the lichen symbionts, fungus and alga, that provide for each other. Mycorrhizae are symbiotic with plants exchanging soil nutrients for carbohydrates.
In commensalism, one species benefits and the other remains unaffected. Wood termite-protozoa relationship is one example, another is Spanish moss growing on the branches of an oak tree.
In parasitism one species benefits at the expense of the other. Mycoheterotrophic plants obtain their nutrients by parasitizing beneficial fungus. Plants that grow without photosynthesis require food from another source such as other autotrophic plants.
