No, poverty is a self-punishment by people and society. God has nothing to do with making people poor.

Many great people have started out in poverty and then pulled themselves out of the hole, and become happy and successful. Not that I think all people that live in poverty are unhappy. If you watch t.v. roaming into other countries, you see the happy, smiling faces living in mud huts with practically nothing.
It definitely is NOT a punishment from "God". Also many, many times in not the result of choices. What about the children that are born in povery. It would seem that at birth one doesn't have a choice. However, for whatever reason I personally believe, (and I do not expect you to believe this also - you are entitled to your own) that we choose our parents. We learn from what happens to us, good or bad, and from this we are supposed to grow and love more.
Sometimes we do not learn from our mistakes, and we are hit over the head again, this time with a hammer (not literally of course), I have seen a lot in my life time and I have found that, poverty is definitely not a "punishment" and definitely not from "God". I attempt to assist by not giving my family presents on Christmas. I donate, in their name, each one of them, to a Children's Charity, say in Darfur. Big question somewhere else on Answers was assisting the homeless.
Some believed they were all being punished, some said they deserved it, but the majority of the answers were compassionate and understood that every individual is unique and we do not know how got to where they are, and should therefore not judge..
No - I don't believe that a loving "God" punishes anybody for anything!.

God has nothing to do with it. It's pure greed that keeps many of the worlds people poor.
They are born poor, have no opportunties, little or no education because schools are often non existant or too expensive for the poor to afford.
The World Bank and IMF which are run by he rich countries (predominantly the USA and Europeans) for years ran policies to ensure that the worlds poor would remain impoverished by lending poor countries money and then dictating the crops to be grown or minerals to be mined, all of which just happen to be essential items such as copra, coffee, tea, and so on that we like to purchase at little relative cost.

Absolutely not!!!!!!!!! It has many variables but none of them are God. He said " I come that you might have life, and have it more abundantly". Does that sound like poverty is from God to you?

Dear Jude,
Poverty is not a punishment, rather it is a trial from our Lord. The proofs below...
And that it is He (Allah) Who gives much or a little (or gives wealth and contentment),
( سÙرة اÙÙجÙ
, An-Najm, Chapter #53, Verse #48)
Your wealth and your children are only a trial, whereas Allah! With Him is a great reward (Paradise).
(سÙرة اÙتغابÙ, At-Taghabun, Chapter #64, Verse #15)
Allah knows the best..

No. Jesus even said we are all better that are the poorest in wealth. That we have to "decided between God and money". I started praying when I was 13 years old "not to make me rich"; except rich with Gods love.

No, its just the world as it is, full of pain and suffering. Don't attach any supernatural beings to it.
