I asked a similar question earlier, but I think the question was too vague to get a insightful response.

I am not asking why it was God's will to create humans, or creatures, but rather to create anything, including rocks or water.

Thanks in advance!

I believe the answer can be found in Genesis 1:2-3 - "And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light." It was because of darkness that the earth was nothing to begin with. In verse 4, it says that "God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness." Nothing was created in the darkness. God, when He divided the darkness from the light, began His creation of the things on the earth, including creatures and humans. I like to think that because God is love and expresses His love, that the earth and everything on it were an expression of His love!

There are three crucial things that God created. He created the Heavens, the earth and the spirit of man within him. He ranks these three together. The heavens are made for the earth and the earth is made for man. All these are made for this God so that He can carry out His purpose in and through man.
Zechariah 12:1
The burden of the word of Jehovah concerning Israel. Thus declares Jehovah, who stretches forth the Heavens and lays the foundations of the earth and forms the spirit of man within him."

Because He is God and Creator, He has the ability to create and all that He creates is Good:)
Creation declares Who God is. Our God dwells in unapproachable light but through His creation we get a glimps of the vastness of God. Man has yet to discover the vast dimensions of the earth and the heavens... yet all of it was created for him to have dominion and represent God on the earth.

all sentient beings create. to create is to experience. to experience is to live. have you ever painted? wrote a poem? why? it is elevating, wonderful and magical in a sense....why wouldn't God create? I paint and when i do I can only poorly copy the wonder of what is around me...in abstract art the painter is creating that which in the strictest sense does not already exist, unique to his/her perspective, so does not exist in the sense of naturalistic art....God created, as the first artist, that which is truly unique...created the colors, the mechanisms for life, the textures and geometric patterns, the beauty and complexity of all of nature, the rhythm of the sounds...the grand scope of life... God is the ultimate artist...and as an artist, when I stand back and look at a painting that turned out just how my mind was hoping, it is so rewarding and fills me with a unique happiness...I imagine God stepped back from earth and was pleased with his creation. I bet he looks down on you and feels wonderful about that part of his creation too!!!! God bless!

Just think, we like doing things and looking at stuff :) He created us and other things to share what He has and give love and created us to love him back. "Then God said, 'let us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." Genesis 1:26
