Wow, that's a pretty depressing list so far. Hopefully there is something out there for 8-year-old girls beyond jewelry, makeup, dolls, and expensive ipods ... Do your 8-year-old a favor and get a timeless (rather than currently "popular") present, ideally one that doesn't assume that 8-year-old girls can't have any interests beyond looking pretty! How about ice skates or rollerblades? Or a sled? Or arts and crafts supplies? Or board games? Or a musical instrument, like a recorder? Or a cool science toy, like Snap Circuits? Or books? A pet (furry, fishy, or something like an ant farm)? A softball glove? A kite? A journal? A kids' cookbook? A watch? A lego set?

I know I sound like a fuddy-duddy, and I guess I am. But gosh, if Bratz dolls and jewelry are the best we can give our 8-year-old girls, that's about the most depressing thing I've heard in ages.

My daughters are really into craft projects, so I get them alot of craft kits from Hobby Lobby. Whether it's candle making, sand art, jewelry/beading, felt , foam, stickers, painting, sewing, clay, you name it they have it at reasonable prices too, 10-20 dollars. They also have the real dollhouses[pricey though, we bought a bookcase shaped like a dollhouse at Target that is 3 foot tall and only 80 dollars that wotks perfect!] with all the real wooden furniture that my 7 1/2 year old loves[mind you my 10 1/2 year old is starting to outgrow this love, but should be great for an 8 year old]! Magnetic and paper dolls are extremely popular in my house as well. The series of American Girl books are still enjoyed by both of my girls and they do have other products that are worth looking at including puzzles and games. Hope any of these ideas help!

maybe I'm a square, but I dont buy into trendy things like Bratz dolls. Try something more timeless and traditional like really funky and bold nail polish colors, or a ton of different colors of embroidery floss to go with a cross-stitch kit or a friendship bracelet making book. Buy something she can use for making crafts, or build or assemble. There is so much more fun to be had with gifts that can be used more than once for multiple things, unlike dolls or other plastic toys.
