The format war is still going on with no clear winner. I like the technical specs of the BluRay - but Sony seems to be mis-managing the rollout like it did with the PS3 hardware and the 'exclusive' contracts it is trying to force game developers to sign: "PS3 and nothing else". Don't forget the "root kit" virus they put on their audio CD's. This is not a company studios are lining up to do business with.

They wont stop making DVD's for a while. Reports range that say only 12-30% of families have HDTV's, then add in the millions of people in Asia, Europe, South America that still have standard def televisions - studios would be foolish to stop making DVD's.

And why phase out DVD's? Both BluRay and HD-DVD play these disks. Small studios can produce DVD's and it will be 'universal'.

The "Next Thing" will be movies you download on a pay-per-view basis. Verizon Fios, ATT, and Microsoft are all investing in high-speed networks and services to get you HD content in your home.

There are players that play both Blu Ray or HD.
I refuse to buy into either as I feel DVDs are more than enough quality for my needs.
And, I'm sure Blu Ray/DVD will skip, freeze, pixel breakdown, etc., just as much as regular DVDs.
On the day Blu Ray was introduced, the player had a malfunction immediately, warning me it hasn't been tested enough before placing it on the market.

And, I have a hard time in life financially as it is, I can't afford to pay the outrageous prices of HD televisions and HD/Blu Ray players.
WTF will the recorders cost when they come out?
I don't want to even think about it.

Blu-Ray will win. It's only a matter of time until Warner Brothers changes its' neutral stance and only releases its' movies on Blu-Ray and no longer on both Blu-Ray and HD DVD. When Warner does the war is over. Warner's President said they would watch the Holiday Sales before choosing a side, and many think that Warner Brothers will side with somebody at the CES event in January 2008.
