I've worked places where some employees were pompous & condescending because they thought they had an "in" with the boss. They thought the boss favored them for one reason or another.
I've often thought that some religious people are pompous and condescending because they thought they had an "in" with God. They believed in their religion or God not necessarily because God was moral but because God had power and they merely wanted to ally with a Force that would grant them superiority over others who didn't have this "in" with the Big Boss in the sky. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
What other reason would there be for these people to be pompous and condescending?

Actually, I think it goes the other way around. Pompous and condescending people like religion because it gives them something to be pompous and condescending about.

That's just how some people are. Another good example of this is Sunday afternoon lunch at the local restaurants. I know a couple of people who are servers and they hate serving the church crowd when they come in for lunch because they are typically harder on the people serving them. You'd think that based on their beliefs they would be the easier crowd.

They have a POV in which they're on God's side, and "ye are of your father the Devil." It's never enough to say that somebody they disagree with is merely wrong - he's wicked, abominable, deluded by Satan, headed to Hell in a handbasket, etc etc. It's never enough to argue on general principles - it's always "My Book says God says, and God is never wrong according to my Book."

Because they put themselves up on a pedestal and like looking down their noses at we "godless" atheists.

They also condemn us to hell with more glee than I've seen from any 5 year old on Christmas day. They're practically orgasmic in their condemnation of nonbelievers.

We are talking about people that believe in a god that was once pleased with animal blood sacrifices and then needed the blood of Christ to wash sins......what more can you say....don't ask them to make sense
