You didn't say if you have store-bought Vista AND XP upgrade / full version Retail disks (not OEM) OR vendor (Dell, HP, etc.) supplied Vista AND XP Recovery Disks. You can't Mix & Match them, you must use your PC manufacturer's XP Recovery disks to avoid driver problems, not a store-bought XP disk.

TIP: The Vista Recovery disks may be ON the hard drive, so Read The Friendly Manual for your PC FIRST to find out how to BURN your own set of Recovery disks.

IF Vendor Supplied:

Back up all personal data from your PC ("Backup" means: copy to CD / DVD / external hard drive). Then, follow the Recovery procedure in the Manual.

IF Store-Bought:

Back up all personal data from your PC. Then, do a store-bought Windows XP "Clean Install", for further instructions, go to: http://www.theeldergeek.com

And, here's the "store-bought Vista to store-bought XP" Step By Step from Microsoft:

No it isn't a good idea. Vista works just fine. It needs a bit of tweaking, but so does XP. I run Vista and have been running it since is came out, and I have none of the problems that you stated. Depending on the version of Vista you are running, it probably needs more ram. Computer manufacturers install just enough ram to get their systems running.

Vista Home Basic needs at least 1 gig

Vista Home Pro needs at least 2 gigs

One other thing that you may want to do is to turn off "User Controls" To do this, do the following. Right click My Computer and then click Properties. Now click Security Center and then turn off User Controls. This will eliminate the Permissions dialogue box that pops up every time you attempt to do someting.
