My cat is overweight. I would like for him to lose at least 3-4 lbs (He weighs about 20-22 lbs/8 years old). Right now he eats about 1 1/2 cup Iams Hairball food a day. Along with that we give him about 3-5 tablespoons a day of tuna. I don't think the tuna is affecting his weight - do you?

Should we change his food; give him less?

Any suggestions at all is grealty appreciated.

This is what I did with the vets instructions. I gave my cat 1/4 to 1/3 cups of food in the morning, and a small amount at night. Always have water available, because he will consume more if the food is not there.
I use Purina One Hairball remedy as I have had several friends say that Iams causes gas. He doesn't need tuna. Fish, many times causes diarrhea.
He will probably holler for more food but he needs to lose that weight as it can lead to diabetes.
He is probably a large cat anyway so don't let him lose too much. 16 to 17 lbs is big but he might be OK at that weight.
Hope this helps.

Cut out the tuna: If you're feeding him tuna packed for human consumption, it's going to have far more salt in it than is good for kitties. And if your cat has been neutered, try giving him a cup of food a day, rather than 1 1/2 cups.

That will be hard: Cats know when it's mealtime, and they can be most vociferous if they aren't satisfied with what they're getting.

Good luck!

I have a cat that had the same problem. I fixed it by feeding it Purina. She only got 2 cups of food a day as a kitten, 1 and a fourth cup as an adult, and when she got really old, we only gave her three fourths a cup. But you can't make that change right away. You have to give them less and less food everyday when you start to reach adulthood. Hope that helped! :D Also, you shouldn't give cats canned food, it's bad for them and does make them gain weight.

Two of our cats were rather tubby so we changed their diets to 'Burns' and remarkably lost weight! We even got the canine version and lost weight. The good thing about Burns is that it is approved by the BUAV; we can eat our food knowing that NO ANIMAL has suffered to produce our food! Why not visit their website where you can get more info?

Tuna is not good for cats. They get addicted to it. To help him lose weight, put his dry food into a treat ball. Then he has to roll the ball around to get his food. It simulates hunting, it is enriching, and he gets exercise too.

Switch to a canned cat food for his bit of wet food each day.
