Depending on how far back you are talking it is because in ancient times and I mean ancient like cave dwelling. Men were generally physically stronger and could work all year round and woman were always pregnant and able to do less work because of it. Those days MEN ruled only because MIGHT was RIGHT then.
We all know today that is a crock, but they believed it strongly that even today many men still feel that superiority complex over woman, and to be honest they are total fools!!!
SURE on average a man may be phyically stronger than a woman but that is it!! Men cannot have children a pain that NO man could endure yet woman do all the time, so woman have a MUCH higher pain threshold than men do.
BOTH are human beings no matter male, female, black, white, yellow, red or green. Everyone should be treated with the same respect and many or most know this today.
For eons though it was a totally male dominated world for one reason only, MIGHT made RIGHT. Men had the ability to physically control there family. ONLY ONE Ancient civilization allowed woman the same free role as men.
that is only one of the so many that existed.
No it was not right, but neither was slavery, war, and many things.
We cannot focus on the past too much and dwell on it or we will never change it from happening over and over.
luckily we live in a day where equality is not perfect but it is better than it has ever been before however much work needs to be done to make everyone regardless of race, sex or religion have the same equal chance in life.
thats my opinion as a male.

After reading all the answers on this from men and woman alike now I know why I stay single :)))))
I agree with everyone above this goes on today at this prescise moment. We have become open and a little more civilized in this day and age bu the under currents between man and woman the foundation will always be there. Woman have many rights now. I think its wrong for any human being to be beaten, raped or abused over one sex being stronger than another I think the relationship between man and woman is sacred a bond with God to grow together in the Divine :)) I think in todays society both men and women alike abuse this privilge of life they have no sacred bounds some get married for political and financial reasons etc.. I think in order for the scales between man and woment to be fair both man and woman have to pull their weight in the relationship. Neither should forced it should be naturual that LOVE and sacredness. I cry when I hear the stories about women being killed because they had a relationship with someone outside their religion where their own fathers and uncles stone them in the streets that is WRONG young girls 17 years old I pray for them always . We are all human beings in Gods Image and Jesus and the holy spirit and God above cry for mankind look it is here now nothing has changed we have to be aware and change the LAWS and change the thinking and you know what it begins with each one us no matter where we live in the Middle East, America, England, Italy,Greece it begins with US MAN & WOMAN ALIKE :)) Peace

I have read many of the posts and everyone just agrees with the status quo. I would like to analyze why this was and why we have changed now.
Before recorded history, and before language. Man and women had only sounds and gestures to communicate. Man worked outside the home and was more able to hunt and gather and foods for the home/community. Thus women stayed home and cooked or gathered wood and tasks associated with preparing food and taking care of the young.
Also, there was no set marriage as a rule. Man slept with one or many women as he chose, and I am sure women also may have chosen to lay with many men. But, when a woman gets pregnant, that is it. She cannot or may not wish to lay with another man till the end of pregnancy. So, thus I think is the way the world developed, and since the introduction of language and equal rights, things have become more equal.
just my 2 cents worth. :)

Guess what? This goes on all over the world right this minute. Lots of people like to use Saudi Arabia as an example, but you can find this anywhere. Abuse/control/victimization of women is built into most cultures, to varying degrees. But women also cooperate in this----women's agendas are much more far-reaching than men's-----women are driven by instinct to have children, no matter what situation they find themselves in.
This may be while living in a garbage dump (as thousands do) in Manila, the Phillippines, or a similar city, or being a professional, well-educated woman living in New York City. The New York woman might use a sperm donor, and raise her child in luxury.
Every sort of behavior in between the two poles of existence is an attempt at the same result---children.
This is because all of us on earth today are the result of this behavior---reproduction. The people that didn't have children are forgotten. The people that did, no matter what they suffered, are not---they are here, living again.
Even though it seems like battered women/poor women/oppressed women are living in torment, they are succeeding in a goal greater than their own existence. Women "rescued" from battering husbands will have his children, no matter what. He may be battering the woman now, but she has an eternal future through her children and their children.

Because man was supposed to be the leader in his family and take charge, however, he went too far, and saw his wife only as chattel and treated her as such. God didn't intend this when He said man was the head of the house. Man overstepped his boundaries and let the control issues go to his head and saw his wife as something to use.

1 Cor 7:
3: Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband.
4: The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife.
5: Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency.
6: But I speak this by permission, and not of commandment.

"Those days" are still with us dear. Macho men will probably always use the muscles that come with testosterone to get their way with their women. Natural selection made the choice and it may have been useful 100,000 years ago, but it has outlived its usefulness. Unfortunately, males wrote the rules for almost all major religions. And since they feared women and the magic of being able to bring new life into the world, they made sure to create religion to give them the advantage. Nature gave women the urge to nurture to insure the survival of their newborn infants. But the urge to nurture can be exploited by lazy males who want to remain infants all their lives. Make sure you don't choose one of these babies for your mate.

Daisy,
I agree with you completely. My wife and I have been married for 32 years and I go to her with any important decision that must be made. If we are undecided then we both discuss it and table it until such time that we can agree on it. I do NOT believe that religious ideology has anything to do with the items that we are discussing here. Paul wrote that a man is to love his wife as he loves himself. Have a wonderful week.
Thanks,
Eds
Joe,
Most of THOSE PEOPLE read only what they want to see in their BIBLES. Sorry...

Physically men are much stronger then women......and this make's a man to think he is suprem..........
Holy book's are so Dumb that they Advice women to submit to MEN......... holy book's tell us" men is the head of the family"........it's like giving the Butcher more power
If all the holy Books are really true word's of God .........
then God should have used his BRAIN a little more......
he created women physically less strong then men.....
so he shd have known that men will take advantage of his physical strength and keep women as just a sex toy and abuse her,..... he shd have known this and he shd have written in the holy book " never raise ur hand on ur women" he shd have told "men shd submit to women".........just to neutralize men's physical strength...........
insted Holy book's give men right to control women and teach women to submit to men...........
In management we are asked to look for risk's which may come in future if we use new process, new product.....it's like gussing the risk's .....................
and i guess the GOD of these holy book's dint see the risk's of his rule's..........

Man's thought of controlling women was not because of religion. It is because of culture. Look around you, man still think he controls women when culture allows him to do so.
