I have been painting for many years. I am trying to loosen up on my style, but still paint in a folk-artsy realistic style but not too tight.
Any suggestions?

Another trick is if you wear glasses, try painting without wearing them. I also have asked my painting students to try copying an impressionist they admire. This forces you to really notice the brushstrokes and technique. Keep in mind that often the impressionist mixes the colors on the canvas, not the pallete. Next try doing an abstraction to just convey a mood without really representing anything but using color to communicate. Experiment with layering color and dripping paint on your artwork.

Get a 5 inch brush and a 6 by 6 feet canvas. It should work great to get loose.

And enjoy.

Study the impressionists that should help you loosen up.

get some painting medium and a palet knife and add texture to the strokes (for acrylic).
