Kneeling is an act of humility. It is also a traditional posture of individual prayer. Rule of thumb in Catholic (and Episcopal) churches:

stand to praise
sit to learn
kneel to pray

before entering the pew, most genuflect and this is paying honor to the Blessed Sacrament in the Tabernacle. We get so used to doing this that people still do it when after the Mass on Holy Thursday and they remove the Blessed Sacrament from the Tabernacle. It is kind of funny really, I have done it myself. During the Mass though there are several spots where we may kneel or stand or whatever the liturgy demands. Bottom line here is the Scripture--"at the name of Jesus, every knee shall bend", so whether a person does it now or later---they will kneel before him. I personally think that to argue what the best posture is during a service is useless as the only "correct" posture for man is face down on the ground.

Kneeling in the presense of God is a sign of respect and humility. And remember that when you are in a Catholic church anywhere, you are literally in the presense of God. He is there, in the tabernacle behind the altar. The real Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. And that is why Catholics genuflect and then kneel when they enter church.....

Good answer Momo ;-)

Catholics genuflect when entering and leaving a Church (or a pew).

Kneeling on one knee is a sign of honor and worship to Jesus Christ and an expression of faith in his real presence in the tabernacle as consecrated bread, the Eucharist.

With love in Christ.

We genuflect upon first entering the church out ofr respect for the Real Presence of Christ in the tabernacle.

We kneel in the pew to PRAY. We quiet ourselves in preparation for the Mass. We come into the presence of the Lord by first opening our hearts and minds to His words.

It has always amazed me that Protestants DON'T kneel in church.

In all Catholic churches there is a place called the `Tabernacle` where the consecrated hosts are kept and as we Catholics fully believe that in each Host is the real presence of Christ we genuflect and kneel to pay homage and due respect.

We kneel, because there are consecrated hosts (bread that has been changed into the Body of Jesus) stored in the tabernacle. Not all of the Eucharist is consumed during mass, so there may be some stored in it. One can tell if there is any stored in it because a candle next to the tabernacle will be lit. It is a sign of respect and love to Jesus.

We kneel because we are the in presence of Christ the Lord and King in the Blessed Eucharist. It is a sign of honor, respect, and humility before Him.

If you walked into a royal court to stand before your king, you would kneel or genuflect (kneel on one knee) to show your respect and submission.

Catholics have no king but Jesus. He is actually present in the appearance of consecrated bread, as he promised in John 6:

35 Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty."
55 "For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink."

The body of Christ in the form of consecrated bread is kept in a small box in a Catholic church. During the Mass, God changes more bread into the body of Christ. It is to Christ that we kneel or genuflect.

Cheers,
Bruce
