Am i doing the right thing by thinking about getting a kitten, or should i blow the thought, as they might not get a long? I went to the r.s.p.c.a today, but most of the kitten are not any good for to be rehome with dogs, and children under the age of 5 yrs, as i have a daughter who is 2 yrs, but loves cats. Please help with any advice, and mostly people who have had or got dogs and cat together.

a friend of mine has 3 cats and a dog. she didnt get the at the same time but they are all friends. she's had them since she was about 1 or 2 and adours them. she treats them all the same so jealousy doesnt occur. if your 2 yr old treats the pets differently then a situation may occur but if not it should be fine

The best time to get a dog and cat together is at a young age so they grow up together and will be friendly. Not to say you can't have one grown and the other young. I find that when you bring a cat into a dog house, once the dog gets used to them (and so far it is more the cats getting used to the dog as they are bigger and scare them) the dogs start to think of the cat(s) as their cat(s) and may not nessarily take to strange cats but will protect theirs. If you have a male dog you don't want to get a femail if you don't plan on fixing her it wont work well as he will sniff around her and generally they will act lovey when she is in heat otherwise if she is fixed or anyother comination shouldn't matter and they should get along fine. It is more the personality then the gender unless you get two males who insist on both dominating then you could have a problem.

Since you have a puppy who is probably very rambunctious right now, you may want to wait to get a kitten. If you want a cat, make sure to get an older cat who can defend itself or jump to high places where your dog can't.

Now, I know cats and dogs who are the best of pals. So the myth about them being 'natural enemies' is just that- a myth. But cats as a rule are more fond of peace and quiet than dogs, so keep that in mind.

And the gender does not matter.

Good luck!

we are in the same situation. 1 lone female dong (big dog too a Labrador) and we went and got a kitten for my sister. and while i wouldnt say they are the best of friends they play so sweetly together and the dog is so gentle with the kitten. we made sure to introduce them very slowly over a few days and supervised.

it can and is often done. the kitten we got was from a litter that lived with other cats and three dogs. so maybe look for a kitten that has grown up with dogs.

Well, if you got them at a young age then theres a 99.9% chance that they will get along. I have a dog who is about a year old and about 2 months ago I got 2 new kittens.
All of them get along really well. And if your daughter loves cats then why not get a kitten? Sounds like she would enjoy having a cat!

Well at home I have a chihuahua and a cat. They don't fight or anything they just ignore each other and my dog gets super jealous and will have to be held or played with when the cat is around - it's ridiculous and it makes me mad. But that's just because shes a chihuahua, and that's how they are. At my moms house she has a big dog and two cats and one of them actually loves the dog and will sleep with her and hang around the dog, while the other one is always outside killing birds and mice ... you never know I guess.

I have just got a kitten who gets on great with my 2 dogs. The only trouble is that the dogs are more robust and when they play with the kitten they can be quite rough. Being able to control the puppy when it is too boisterous seems a sensible precaution, so for that reason I would wait a bit.

I think that having a 2 year old daughter who is really a puppy herself and a 6 month old puppy dog is really a handful. Adding a kitten to the mix would make it difficult to enjoy any of them.
