Maybe because it's only available around Christmas time, but I really like eggnog.

Is the homemade stuff worth the trouble, taste- and cost-wise?

Quite frankly, any hints on making homemade would be appreciated too!

Thanks!

Absolutely - homemade is always better and freshness is guaranteed because you just made it. A simple recipe:
INGREDIENTS:
2 eggs, beaten well
3 tbs sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1/8 tsp nutmeg, ground
2 1/3 cups milk
PREPARATION:
Blend all ingredients together and serve chilled. (for the Alcoholic version add Bourbon, Makers Mark or Brandy as preferred)
Hope this helps!

Homemade is MUCH better then store bought!!! =)
1st answer is a good recipe but i don't like nutmeg so that's optional. Also a pinch of salt brings out the sweetness.
And pleas don't worry about the raw eggs there not going to hurt you. My grandmother made it for us kids all the time when we were growing up. (She herself enjoyed it till she past away at 96yr old).
---Have fun

Yes, it really is worth the trouble

www.marthastewart.com has recipes ....hers are a bit heavy on the budget, but you could change around the ingredients....not heavy cream but light cream would do, the blend of the whiskeys is nice....

if you make one with raw eggs, you could consider cooking them with some of the sugar (in a double boiler) gently into a custard before adding the cream and whiskeys... or get some pasturized eggs, if there are any available where you live...

cheers!

Although i had home made egg nog once, and it was delicious, it is a lot of work to do it.

Store-bought may be better for you
