i'd have cork or as a second choice, linoleum...real linoleum, not the vinyl flooring that many kitchens have. i hate the little "dimples" that most of it has, because it collects water and dirt. real lino comes in great colours now. i wouldn't want ceramic tile and definitely not granite; hard on the feet and legs and if you drop anything, it will break.

Cork. It's easy to stand on, it's sound absorbing, it's a renewable product, it absorbs the warmth from the heating system in the winter, and the coolness from the air conditioning in the summer - giving you a comfortable floor all year round. If you drop something on the floor, whatever you dropped stands a chance of survival. If you get a dent from a heavy piece of furniture it will spring back. Just clean with hardwood cleaner and a dust mop.
Cork is an old flooring option that has developed a renewed interested as we become more environmentally conscious - you will find cork floors in the Mayo Clinic, the Guggenhiem, the Library of Congress, and many other public buildings - so you know they'll take a licking and keep on going.

I had hardwood floors in my last 2 kitchens and loved it. I have linoleum now and am saving up to replace it with wood. I found wood just as easy to care for as linoleum, but it was warmer and looked much better. Tile looks good, but it's too hard and cold for the kitchen.

Wood is a living thing, and wouldn't recommend it for a kitchen. In my neck of the woods most people have cernamic tile. It's easy to clean and looks great, the only problem with it is it can get cold in winter, so many install infloor heating.

I would have tile it looks nicer then wood and it doesn't look bad old as wood does. Wood when old needs sanding or re polished and tile all it needs is t be cleaned.
What i don't get is when people put carpet over wood.
I have linoleum in the hall it was carpet but it was old carpet and it was easier and cheaper to put in then carpet.
Same in the living room we had carpet but took it up because it was old and dirty but haven't put anything in its place. So its just concrete.

I think ceramic tile is the most durable and easiest to maintain, however , it must be installed correctly and only on a solid floor or you will have problems with tile and grout joints cracking before long.

I'd have a dirt floor because then I wouldn't care if I spilt something, and I wouldn't have to sweep, wash or wax it. (obviously I'm a bachelor, but some of you women and married men could use a few tips on easier living)
