I live in an apartment complex. About once a week, my new neighbor cranks his bass to 11. Here are the steps I have already taken.

1. I asked him to turn it down, and I was ignored.
2. I have contacted the rental office at least 3 times.
3. I have pounded on the floor (he lives below me).
4. I have cranked my bass to drown his out (probably bothers my other neighbors).

I don't want to contact the police for two reasons. For one, I don't want to start trouble. Secondly, it sometimes happens in the middle of the day and I don't think they could do anything.

I am tired of calling the office. I am probably annoying them just as much as my neighbor is annoying me. I love music. I am not a 75 year old guy, but when I want to relax in MY apartment, I should be able to. Should I send him a letter? Should I call the cops? I don't want to start trouble or make him seek revenge on me. Any ideas? Thanks so much for reading my question!

Throw eggs at his door. I did that once to one of my old neighbors years ago every day! He never caught me and despite all of HIS complaints to the office, nothing was resolved for him, either! Eventually he moved out.... Your landlord must handle this situation, so don't let them ignore it! Also, the police have to respond if the noise happens after 10 pm. I would keep calling them every time that jerk does it. After a while, he will make those cops angry... Also, it just might be in your lease or rental agreement that all tenants must live in a way that does not disturb or annoy other tenants. LOOK AT YOUR RENTAL AGREEMENT FOR THIS. IF it DOES say that, then tell the landlord that the tenant is violating the rental agreement. That other tenant might need to be evicted. If the landlord ignores the rules, speak to a lawyer about your options - you may be allowed to put your rent into an escrow account where the landlord will not get the rent $$ unless they are doing his/her job. You cannot simply withhold rent from a landlord, but it IS legal to do that through an escrow account (in NY state). Check in your state. OR you can consider moving out.

Well calling the cops will most likely create more problems. I know this from my own experience... and elderly woman lived above me. And there was a complex about 100 feet away, and they would always blast their music... when we hear it we knew the cops would be banging on our door... what's funny about it is, it was spanish or mexican music... and the people who did it were mexican. So it was obvious it wasn't us... the cops were at my house like 4 times a week minimum, anyway the lady starting calling my husband boss, and children services. First she told them we neglected the baby and she couldn't even sit up, and the second time she told both the boss and CPS we were making meth...

eventually we filed charges because she started harassing us. She would call in the middle of the night, and run her vacuum on TILE floor at like 3am... she was nuts...

we contacted the landlord so many times because we wanted him to do something. He ended up evicting us both... which was nonsense, we were 100% innocent...

If your land lord will not help and this person is rudely ignoring your requests, I would say call the police... you will probably end up with retaliation but, this person is just very disrespectful...

Good luck with what ever you decide... i know how hard it can be.

Leave a notice at his door an information slip like "latest findings by the audioScience department in London, England has found that the negative effects of loud bass music. are:
such as lower libido, lost sex drive, impotence, loss of erection, loss of girl friends (leading to more self stimulation) as well as hearing loss.
If that note does not grab his attention, especially if it looks official.....and some of it will be true as he ages, these things will start to happen for an "unexplained reason"

So what if it only might be true. You may get him to turn the darn thing off.

There is a limit on how loud a noise can be no matter what time of day. Go ahead and call the police. You have done everything else that you can do but he really is guilty of disturbing the peace. You have a right to enjoy your home and he is selfishly infringing on that right.

write him a letter telling him just what you have said here. "I don't want to start trouble by calling the police, but unfortunately that will be my next step if i continued to be ignored." and maybe in your letter you can let him know when you are not home, and ask him to only blast it when you are not there. good luck

call the police and tell them that you're an elderly man trying to relax a bit in your apartment and you can't because this man's bass is entirely to loud. Then tell them that you have complained with the office and that you also asked him nicely " Can you please turn it down a bit"

I think you need to go to the Police.

Seems like you have run out of options.
