How do you reason with the mean and vendicitve behavior or actions of God in the OT? The OT God is so extremely cruel, mean and shows so much favoritism. He encourages killing of children/babies, women and even raping of women.

Yes, I have read the OT and I don't pretend to know why GOD does what he does

The Old Testament is a "bootstrap" phase. People could not be "born again" so sanctions existed to sway the Hebrews towards obedience. The sanctions were normally harder on the Israelites than on their enemies. This very hard discipline was not ideal, but God had to prepare for the coming of the Messiah. Now the Messiah has come the real "Operating System" is up and running. Examine Jesus' behaviour and know that is what is ideal for christians - loving ministry, opposing the wicked in a non-violent way. People need to be born again before they can enter into this, as then they are forgiven and the Holy Spirit can come and dwell in them to aid them to become like Jesus.

I do prefer reading the New Testament as the moral standards are more elevated, and the sick behaviour is only seen in those who are worldly or non-christian religious zealots.

When will you people ever get it? Probably never and how sad that is for you.
Jeremiah 31:2-4
2 This is what the LORD says:
"The people who survive the sword
will find favor in the desert;
I will come to give rest to Israel."

3 The LORD appeared to us in the past, [a] saying:
"I have loved you with an everlasting love;
I have drawn you with loving-kindness.

4 I will build you up again
and you will be rebuilt, O Virgin Israel.
Again you will take up your tambourines
and go out to dance with the joyful.

Just in case you don't know this - all believers are the "grafted in" to the promise to Israel.

The Old Testament is God's judgment on those nations that forgot God.

Psalm 9:17
The wicked shall be turned into hell,
and all the nations that forget God.

"...throughout the Old Testament we see God’s judgment and wrath poured out on unrepentant sinners. Likewise, in the New Testament, we see that the wrath of God is still “revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness” (Romans 1:18)"
