The Bible tells us that there is not only life after death, but eternal life so glorious that “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9). Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, came to the earth to give us this gift of eternal life. “He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5).

Forever is timelessness, and timelessness is eternity. To get to this timelessness, live fully aware of the present. In doing so, you position yourself in such a way that you are in touch with the past and the future, as you exist in the present. That is the message of Jesus' sacrificial death, pinned at the center of the vertical and horizontal levers, symbols of the mortal limitations of space and time, respectively.

At the center, you are neither drawn to the left, or to the right, and the high or the low. The cross has 4 arms, symbolizing the 4 directions (east, west, north, south) or the 4 elements of man (intellectual, emotional, will, physical). By symbolically joining these 4 arms in the center, through sacrificing His own intellectual, emotional, will and physical body, he showed to us that to live forever, you must be detached from any form of selfish movements in your intellectual, emotional, will and physical body. If you are faithful to this, you will experience Heaven even in this life. Those who are ready, will understand that there is a deeper message to this.

Well, that all depends on who you are speaking to. According to Lao Tzu, "There are many paths to enlightenment. Be sure to take one with a heart."

According to M. Scott Peck, M.D. "Nirvana or lasting enlightenment or true spiritual growth can be achieved only through persistent exercise of real love."

But if you look into a bible or religious text of each of these religions, you will get an answer that is as varying as it is controversial. This is something that you will have to decide for yourself. I'll tell you what I tell everyone else. Go into your community and check into your local places of worship. Speak to the leaders, the members; ask about mission statements, etc. Find the one that fits you the best and stick with it. I mean, look at how much there is to choose from!

Abrahamic religions (Bábism, Bahá'í Faith, Christianity, Gnosticism,) Quranic religions, (Judaism, Rastafarianism, Sabians, Samaritanism) Dharmic traditions (Ajivika, Ayyavazhi, Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism), Panth Religions
(Sikhism), Iranic religions (Manichaeism, Mazdakism, Yazdânism, Zoroastrianism), Taoic traditions (Caodaism, Chondogyo, Confucianism, Falun Gong, Shinto, Taoism, Yiguandao) African diasporic religions, Indigenous religions,
African traditional religions, Eurasian Shamanism, Native American religions, Pacific religions, Cargo cults, Ancient Near East, Indo-European, Hellenism, New religious movements, Parody or mock religions, Nonsectarian and trans-sectarian religious or spiritual movements and practices, Esotericism, Mysticism, Magic (Religion), Organizations promoting Ecumenism, Systems claiming not to be religions, but which have characteristics of religion, etc. Not to mention the Celtic religions, the Greek, Norse, the Occult.

They all have different approaches to what you so mildly refer to as 'forever'. To list them all would be near impossible. The best I can suggest is do research on as many as you can and decide for yourself.

Jesus is the Road for ever
Mt 28:19-20
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
1 John 3:17
And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
Re 22:5
And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.
Da12:3
And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.

You must first understand the finite drawn from the infinite. What is the finite? Is Nature the finite drawn from the infinite? If so, then Nature is the world of appearance, and the Infinite which is spiritually is the world of reality. Quite an in dept study isn't it?

I used to work at heights, one of my co-workers told an apprentice who did not like using a lifeline that "Eternity is just one step away."
I never saw that apprentice not tied off with his safety harness and the lifelines after that.

Time is bound up with the universe in which we reside. It will eventually come to an end and with it, time will also come to an end. Eternity is nonsense.
