Considering you have no huge window and door drafts. The standard used to be 1 ton for every 750 sq. feet. That has changed in the last few years to every 500 Sq. feet. = 1 ton. I have seen contractors use way under sized units to save money. They work but they have to work ALL the time to keep temp. A new unit is only a few hundred dollars more per ton at most. The installation should be no different. One thing to keep in mind is the size of your refrigerant lines if you are upgrading in size drastically they will need to be larger as well. I say 4 tons for 2000 sq.ft.. It will pay for itself.

Square feet is not the only consideration for heating/cooling systems. Windows and doors also contribute to the needs. I would suggest having someone come out and do a check. I had a 3 ton unit for a 1800 sq. ft. home.
