Our new cat is about three years old and we got her yesterday from a siamese rescue center. The president of the center was telling us she has always had watery eyes and a runny nose. And she has a flea allergy. Could the symptoms be related to the allergy or any other ones we don't know about? She's a Burmese, so her face is very short and hatchet-like almost. Would her face make-up have anything to do with it?

Thanks.

She's tested negative for Feline Leukimia.

Oh, my God. The person at the recue centre didn't mention anything about Cat 'flu?! This is a highly contagious disease that can certainly be fatal to young or very old cats! Symptoms: sneezing, watery eyes and nose.

Burmese don't usually have the respiratory problems associated with breeds like Persians, because they're not squash-faced. I mean really, they're not at all squash-faced! This is typical Burmese face shape:

No these would not be symptoms of a flea allergy. Symptoms of this are: excess scratching, hair loss particularly around the flanks and red, inflamed skin.

Need you take the cat to a vet when you got her? You need to.

Burmese cats beautiful creatures. Yes, a cat with a short face is more prone to nasal issues, but that does not mean it is ok for the cat to live with these problems. There is something wrong that can usually be diagnosed and treated. It could be an infection, allergy or other problem. Cats that come from rescue centers are exposed to many potential things, so it is recommended that you take her to the vets for a general exam and checkup.

I would be a little concerned about watery eyes and a runny nose, especially if your cat came from a rescue center. I would have him/her checked out by my own vet. A lot of viruses are airborne and a cat in a shelter is open to many illness'. Don't worry, there is medicine for these things. Consult your vet.

Being is how she was in a shelter with other strays, you might consider having blood work done for feline aids and luekemia. Both are very serious and are passed on in shelters and missions
